In a welcome change from last years Nats when the wind touched the high teens, the breezes varied from 5 to 10 knots for this year's classic, with clear skies and mid-70 temperatures. Just what the 7-boat contingent from Arizona was hoping for - cool weather!

Kevin Laube, a junior sailor from Mission Bay, with his father Tom as crew, sailed a brilliant campaign, scoring five bullets out of seven races, earning him a hard-fought Gold Fleet Championship by three points. Jim Ach won the Master's trophy, for best place in the over-55 category. A new pair of racers at Mission Bay, "Doc" Caroe, with his wife Andrea as crew, easily won Silver Fleet with four firsts, yielding a five point margin of victory. A total of 20 boats participated, representing four different fleets, San Diego, Los Angeles, Phoenix/Tempe, and Lake Mission Viejo, CA.

Our thanks go to our sponsors, Catalina Yachts and Quantum Sails, who provided a plethora of generous door prizes for the annual dinner. Special thanks go to Kent Nelson, a design engineer from Catalina Yachts, who not only delivered the door prizes, but also slaved away on one of the mark-set boats. Now that's hands-on sponsorship!
