Mast Step Repair from Underneath the Hull

Looking on YouTube for something else, I came across this series of videos showing a mast step repair from underneath the hull.

I have thought about doing this, but not seen it demonstrated before.

Has anyone ever done a repair this way and if so how did it work out long-term?

Its my guess that those who think that's a better method than adding an inspection port in the deck are in a minority. While the port makes it obvious that a repair was made, that may be a good thing and the port has other uses.
