Mainsheet material

What material should a medium to heavy air sheet be made of? I went to a marine supply store and the cost was pretty high for their line for sheets. Then I was in Home Depot and saw what I thought was the same colored line for half the price. The HD line was nylon and some other material.

altair,
Dan at Wind Line Sails (http://www.windline.net/index.html) can supply any line you need and is very knowlagable about the SF and the needs of its sailors.

Also check APS, (http://www.apsltd.com/default.asp), they have a chart listing the line lengths for a Sunfish. APS's mainsheet is "Rooster Ropes Polilite, which is light, will not absorb water, and best of all the unique construction almost eliminates twists and tangles." Suggested length 28' to 33' of 5/16". The complete "Sunfish Racing Line Package" is $69.95, Part No. APSSRLP, includes all lines, ties, centerboard shock line and stopper balls.

I purchased some low stretch 5/16" line at the local marine shop for about $27. Unlike the Rooster Rope, it absorbs water, sinks and tangles. The rope you found at HD will probably have the same problems and stretch as well being nylon. Many ropes look very similar but vary in their respective uses (sailing, mountianeering, horse riding and general purpose). Good luck.
