Main sheet length

I just bought a used laser. The current main sheet is fifty feet long. That's obviously too long, but what's an appropriate length to trim it to?

Depends on what you do with the tail. If you tie it to the aft end of the hiking strap (which I recommend), then 13.5 metres is perfect. If you tie it to the forward end (not as good) or just tie a stopper knot (not recommended), then you need a little less. Cut to 13.5 m and see how it works. The boom should go just past 90° when you let it all out.
