Day 1
280 Master sailors were greeted at Hyannis Yacht Club with a forecast of a
15 knot sea breeze for the first day's racing, however it failed to
materialise and racing was carried out in a 6 to 9 knot southerly breeze.
The Apprentice fleet (35 to 44 years) were first under way with Taimnen
Jyrki of Finland taking out the first race with Chris Raab of USA and Mark
Littlejohn from Britain filling the minor placings. In the second race of
the day Germany's Andreas John was the victor, with Andrew Pimental USA and
the Australian defending champion Brett Beyer second and third. Pimental
leads the Apprentice fleet after the first day.
Littlejohn, currently 2nd overall, commented on the days racing: "It was
one hell of a tough day".
In the Masters division (45 to 54 years) Ed Adams from USA had a perfect
day winning both heats. In the first race he and class president Ian
Lineberger both went left on the first beat to establish an unbeatable lead
with Peter Follansbee making it a clean sweep for the Americans in the
first race. In the second race Adams beat James Jacob and David Frazer also
from the USA making a great day for the host country in the Masters fleet.
The Grand Masters (55 to 64 years) were led home by Peter Seidenberg with
Bill Symes and Chris Boome all from USA filling the minor placings. In the
second race Symes went one better taking the gun over the line with Pierre
Roche of France and Rob Lowndes of Australia coming second and third.
Defending champion Keith Wilkins from Britain finished with a 4th and 5th
place for the day to end in equal second with Chris Boome trailing Bill
Symes by 6 points.
The radial fleet for the first time at a Masters Worlds is being scored by
age group. Mark Orams of New Zealand took the gun in both heats in the
