Laser Bass Strait DVD Review

Michael Blackburn’s crossing of Bass Strait is something that pricked up the ears of every Laser sailor across the world. He was inspired to try something different after years of sailing his boat at an elite level internationally.

This DVD is a solid documentary account of his crossing. The planning, training and support he received are all well covered. The footage is of excellent quality, filmed mostly from the support vessel. Michael’s narration is an excellent overtone and takes you into the mind of what makes a sailor of his level tick. His patient and disciplined preparation that he has applied to his racing is also a great strength to him in this voyage.

This achievement certainly focused good attention on to our sport. And I was surprised to learn the crossing time of 14 hours is a record for all sailing boats across Bass Strait.

The DVD extras are also of high quality, as Michael explains in fine detail many attributes of downwind sailing. Again the footage and his narration are excellent.

If you are a Laser sailor then you should grab yourself a copy of this right now. Yet the impressive nature of this feat and the nice production will make entertaining viewing for anyone.

The North American Laser Class has a long standing relationship with DR Blackburn and has stocked his books for sale to the interested Laser Sailors. Certainly our North American Class Office, in a continued effort to serve the needs of the Laser sailor in North America will be stocking this video!!

Being in the broadcast industry, it should be noted that this was produced in Australia (PAL broadcast) & most likely will not play on TV DVD players in the US.
This has probably been addressed, but doesn't hurt to double check that the DVD's in the US need to be NTSC compatible for US distribution.
