This past weekend saw the start of the 47th Winter Anzio & Nettuno Championship and the Lozzi Trophy. The fleet of J/24s was treated to sunshine and ideal sailing conditions on both days. On Saturday, the Race Committee Chair Livia Serafini was able to make the most of the sunny day with a mistral wind of 7-8 knots, giving three races for the 10 J/24s engaged in the Lozzi Trophy. The real star of the day was Vincenzo Lamberti’s ITA 489 VALHALLA BLUE JAY (LNI Anzio) who dominated all three races. The provisional classification drawn up after the first four races, sees the Italian Navy’s ITA 358 ARPIONE, skippered by Michele Potenza, leading with a 4-2-2-2 for 10 points. They are followed by ITA 428 PELLE ROSSA sailed by Gianni Riccobono with a 2-4-4-3 tally for 13 points. Sitting in third is Lamberti’s VALHALLA BLUE JAY with a DNC-1-1-1 tally for 14 points. On late Sunday morning, a nice west wind spread across the bay between 8-12 knots, which allowed the J/24s to be started literally right off the beaches. Under the direction of the Race Committee Chair Mario de Grenet, with Giovanni Colucci and Alfredo Posillipo as assistants, they managed to run three flawless races. With ideal conditions and slightly more intense wind, the 20 or so J/24s engaged in fierce combat, leading to two general recalls and six boats disqualified for black flag. After the first six races of the Anzio & Nettuno Winter Series, the fleet is led by the Italian Navy team ITA 416 LA SUPERBA, skippered by Ignazio Bonanno. They’ve won five of six races so far. A distant second is Riccobono’s PELLE ROSSA with a 6-3-7-3-4-2 record for 18 points. Third place is currently Massimo Mariotti’s ITA 501 AVOLTORE with an 8-2-4-4-8-3 tally for 21 points. The 47th edition of the Winter Championship, is organized by the Circolo della Vela di Roma together with Nettuno Yacht Club, and Real Circolo Canottieri Tevere Remo.
