Please tell us if the boat leaks or needs other serious work. Also whether the rudder is 'old school' or 'new' style. The status of the sail and the spars is relevant for pricing as well.

Rudder is old school. Sail is OK has repaired pin hole. Deck is oxidized with some spider cracks. No major cracks near mast hole. Boat is elerly person owned, he cannot sail any longer. Boat apears dry and wight seems right.

'OK buy' I would say if the following tests don't reveal problems:

Run a leak test (lightly pressurize the hull and check potential problem areas with soapy water) and
Masttube (pour water into it and observe for 1 h or so)

Weigh it. Ifa boat of that age is 140 or less and it does not leak, $400 is a good deal - not a good racing boat, but fine for sailing around. BB

For another $200 or so, it is possible to find a boat with a trailer and is also newer and in a little better condition - possibly. Another thing you might take in to consideration is how much do you anticipate to spend to fix the boat up to get her in running condition......which includes: hull repairs, paint, refitting deck fittings (if needed), refinishing (or repairing) rudder, center board, tiller & hiking stick......and the list could go on depending on the repairs needed.

If a minimal amount of dollars and work is necessary to get her in the water and you're willing to put forth the effort......then go for it. If you're not planning to race (and not everyone wants to) then you have allot of leeway in regards to what is necessary to replace.....such as sail, rigging, old style vs. new style rudder & center board, etc. If what comes with the boat works and is in good condition then that's just less you will have to worry about replacing and you can concentrate more on those areas that really need attention.

Just food for thought...........:)
