halyards

what's a good substitute for the cotton sunfish halyard?? In days of old, we'd use 1/4" dacron. BUT, that was 35 years ago and dacron is no longer easy to find. Need something nonstretch..

There's lots of various yacht braids out there but it isn't inexpensive. For the mainsheet, 32 feet of 1/4 for light air, 5/16 for an all round and 3/8 for heavy air. Annapolis Performance Sailing, Mauri and Intensity are good retailers.

Now that I've re-read your question, I see that it's the halyard you're asking about and not the mainsheet. I'd recommend a fuzzy 3/16th line and the length should be sufficiently twice as long as the height of the mast above the deck. You can always make it shorter later.
