Fiberglass strip and gluing the hull deck seam, why?

In watching videos I see guys using a thin strip of fiberglass saturated in epoxy and then a line of epoxy in the deck hull joint.

Why is the fiberglass used instead of just epoxy?

To me, it is just epoxy being used to glue the 2 parts. The glass does not add anything to that joint as far as my very limited knowledge goes.

I've wondered about that too.

Perhaps a "thick" insertion of wet fiberglass is better than a thin layer of epoxy?
