Fleet 24 had a good turnout this past Wednesday at Tempe Town Lake. We began about 4 pm sailing in light winds and wonderful temperatures in the lower 80's. Later all six boats were docked for the beginning of our feature event-- the Mike Hester Figure 8. With jibs up and mainsails down, we assembled on top of nearby "grassy knoll". On the start signal we all ran down the hill onto the dock, raised mainsails and headed for the first mark which we cleared on portside, then upwind for a starboard clearance of the second mark. After clearing a second round we redocked, dropped mainsails, and ran to finish on top the knoll. Our grand winners were Mike and Maryellen Ferring in "See Ya". Rudy Pinon with crew Dave Rawstrom pulled off an upset fourth by outsmarting the competition with a quicker mainsail douse and great speed on dry ground. We ended with a moonlight picnic dinner, and a short business meeting discussing how to increase our membership. If you have C14, come join us!
