End cap removal and lower boom repair

I am switching out a salt corroded lower boom. Do I need to remove the end cap to switch out the gooseneck?

I also plan on trying the refurb the corroded boom. Can I use JB Marine Weld to fill the pitted areas followed by a light sand and coating with spray primer?

The gooseneck should slide right off, depending on what the cap looks like. Some have a large tab, so sliding off isn't a plan.

Corrosion erodes from outside and inside. If it's concentrated in one spot, I'd reinforce the spar on the inside. You don't want to be looking for a replacement spar!

For end caps that have the tab, how are those removed in order to install a gooseneck?
