Decktop pulley

Hey all, I have noticed that some older Sunfish have a decktop pulley for the halyard to run through. Does anyone know when this was discontinued?

Is it a problem to replace this with the fairlead that the current boats have?

Thanks.

Discontinued about 1970, maybe earlier.

I replaced my standard fairlead with a stainless-steel lined one. The screws were spaced one inch apart. Maybe the pulley (block) mounting has the same spacing.

I have a 1971, and it has a pulley/block. It works as it should, and assuming yours works as well, I would not replace it. Likely you would have to drill new holes and fill old ones if you did.

My guess is that the block was replaced by a fair lead cost reasons.

Good luck,

My ‘71 and ‘73 both have the deck pulley. My ‘84 has the fairlead. Why replace the pulley?
Good question. The pulley should be an easier "pull". (But the stainless steel-lined fairlead isn't legal for racing—go figure).
