Deck Drain Replacement ?

I'm finally getting around to replacing the deck drain plug assembly that I bought over a year ago for my older (mid 1970s?) Sunfish.

This is the older style all metal assembly.

My question: Does the included rubber o-ring go around the outer diameter of the tube of the drain assembly fitting? Or does it go on the stem of the threaded removable plug itself?

Without seeing the replacement you picked up, logic makes me think the O-ring goes on the plug like it does on the plastic variety. The deck fitting is more likely to be sealed by a small bead of caulk.
