Daggerboard Questions

can someone please answer these questions.

1...if on a reach will you go faster with a 29 inch daggerboard or a 39 inch?

2..will your sunfish be more stable in higher wind and less likely to capsize with a longer daggerboard ?

thanks.

You should have the daggerboard pulled up quite a ways on a r each so it makes no difference how long the board is. Where did you get a 29 inch board? That seems pretty darn short for a Sunfish. Is it some homemade thing?

The daggerboard has little influence on up wind stability. In high winds it can help to pull the board up a few inches so you do not have to hike so hard. But with your 29 inch board you'd mostly be side slipping anyway.

A sailfish daggerboard is about 30" overall. The shadow board is about 43"

Just happened to have both in the same room with a tape measure. :)

1. You'll go faster forward with a longer daggerboard vs sideways :) we could barely tack with the small daggerboard that came with our early wooden Sunfish. It was great on a run...

2. What BB said, and longer daggerboard helps with tacking.

I have two "shadow-boards". One is three inches longer than the other!

The shorter of the two was included with my Porpoise II sale last month.

So, which of these three would you have "let go"? P5270041_zpsebbb4092[1].jpg
