Correct screws

Hi! I want to replace ALL the screws on my Sunfish since I will be fiber-glassing and gel-coating my mid 60's Sunfish. Types, size, material, and placement ? does anyone have a guide?

Can’t you just take them out and match them? Assume you’ve read the warnings about removing the bridle eye straps, halyard block and cleat, and bowhandle? If the wood backing blocks fall away, you will have to install new ones.

Remove one of each size, count the rest, and buy as many as you need to do the job. Stainless steel all the way, marine stainless (i.e. the best kind available). Heed that advice about carefully removing and replacing one screw at a time where backing blocks are involved.

Funny you should mention screws, I'm puttering around the house today, making a few small repairs and touching up some paint before my family arrives on their holiday visit. And to effect certain repairs, I had to go to my "War Room" to find a few small fasteners and whatnot...

While I was doing this, I decided to consolidate all the small loose fittings, fasteners, etc., which I keep in plastic coffee cans. Well, I had two plastic cans and one metal can, but I decided to consolidate all the small stuff into the two plastic cans, since I've used up plenty of hardware on two "fixer homes."

I now have two cans jammed full of small hardware & fasteners, not to mention several of those large compartmentalized plastic trays filled with other stuff, and the usual boxes of fasteners on the side. But the two plastic coffee cans are filled with odd bits that I've collected since 1973!!! :D

Not counting stuff that started to get rusty and was subsequently tossed... I don't like the least bit of rust in my collection, LOL. So here's my big question: AM I THE ONLY CHEAP BASTARD WHO SAVES EVERY FRIGGIN' UNUSED NUT, BOLT, OR SCREW LEFT OVER FROM VARIOUS PROJECTS??? ;)

I don't think of myself as a HOARDER, as this stuff is all useful---found everything I need for today's repairs without going to the hardware store---but maybe I AM a friggin' hoarder when it comes to hardware. I mean, 47 YEARS WORTH OF ODD BITS & FASTENERS SAVED??? Does anyone else do this???

That's my deep philosophical question for the day, maybe somebody else can answer it... after looking at all this hardware laid out on my huge dinner tray (not even one whole can's worth), I'm thinking perhaps I should buy a ROCKPIPE and smoke a BIG OL' RETROACTIVE BOWL O' CRACK!!!

And no, I don't usually smoke crack, nor do I drink that cr@ppy brand of coffee, I think one of my seven brothers used to buy that cr@p and the empty cans just happened to be there when I needed them. I used to have metal cans, but they rusted out over the years and were replaced with plastic. :)

Actually, I don't drink ANY coffee nowadays, though I COULD if I wanted to have some, probably some gourmet grind with a little kick to it... but I basically quit drinking coffee after I moved to Show Low and started chillin' in the country, LOL. Didn't need the "go-fast juice" in the White Mountains, AYE???

Meh, here's the evidence, somebody tell me I'm NOT the only FRIGGIN' HARDWARE HOARDER at this website, PUH-LEEZ!!! ;)

47 YEARS!!! Damn... and THIS is just the tip of the iceberg, but it's the nucleus of my hoarding collection. I bet if you put all that cr@p into a shipboard cannon or swivel and fired it, you could do some SE-WIOUS DAMAGE to the person who recently violated your right of way, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

"TAKE THAT, YOU IGNORAMUS!!! LEARN THE 'RULES OF THE ROAD' NEXT TIME, DAMN YOU!!!" ;)

#8 x 1 inch silicone bronze wood screws for eyestraps and halyard hardware, #10 x 1 inch sb for rudder fittings. #8 x 1 inch marine stainless for bow handle. 10-32 x 3/4 inch stainless steel machine screws to attach the coaming.

Okay, I think ya have me beat... I might have to post shots of the "War Room" in days ahead, there's still a bunch of stuff in there, LOL.

CC,

There is a fine line between frugal and hoarder, but with the current price of marine grade fasteners, your quasi-organized collection looks fine to me.
My primary collection for non-marine fasteners is in an old galvanized paint roller container and dates to about 1967 when was a newly minted Air Force 2nd. Lt. My marine grade collection lives in zip lock bags and dates to about 1962.

I copy that, and thanks for your service... I hail from a military family (2 CDRs, USN Submarine Service, an uncle who was a USAF Colonel in the Pentagon at the end of his career, several immediate family members who served in the USA: Combat Engineers, Army nurse, I was in the Infantry, go figure).

I had a call from a good friend and spent some time on the phone, but now I'm good, I just have to post these "War Room" pics to try and save face, LOL. Here we go, it's a bit of a clusterf#% in there right now, I should probably reorganize it sometime soon, but it ain't gonna happen today, 10-4? ;)

Damn, I usually keep the "War Room" better organized, LOL. Meh, I'll probably clean it up soon, just not today... if I talk my niece into coming to live here in AZ, I'll give her the master bedroom and go trucking, if I haven't found any other job yet, that issue is still up in the air. Meh, we'll see what happens...

There's one box of titanium drill bits I use as a doorstop, I'm sure there are a few MIA bits where I've snapped the damned things like toothpicks, LOL. I have several boxes of drill bits, but every last one has MIA bits due to breakage... maybe those should be classified as KIA bits, aye? :(

Check out this stainless mixing bowl I used this morning for the stuffing going into the bird, I actually named this bowl "The Man" because it gets the job done without any spillage, LOL. I set the can o' cranberry jelly next to the bowl so y'all can see how large the bowl actually is, LOL.

Nice bowl, I've had it for years, I wasn't about to leave it when I left Kalifornia, LOL. Back when I used to have a dozen friends or family over for dinner in Coronado, I'd make salad or whatever in this bowl, and it NEVER let me down, it ALWAYS handled the job, no worries. I like "The Man!!!"---all hail "The Man!!!" :D

Well, I'd better go get cleaned up and turn on the TV, maybe I can pick up some football action with my Roku Streaming Stick. If not, f#% it, the NFL has lost ALL support with their political machinations, 10-4? No way I pay extra either to see a game which I used to watch for free... p!ss on that. LOL... :)

Y'ALL BE GOOD, AND ENJOY YOUR THANKSGIVING DINNER, I KNOW I WILL!!! MY STOMACH IS STARTING TO GROWL TOO, IT PROBABLY THINKS MY THROAT HAS BEEN CUT, LOL. I DIDN'T REALLY EAT BREAKFAST TODAY, AS I WANTED TO ENJOY THIS THANKSGIVING MEAL!!! IT SHOULD BE PRETTY DARNED TASTY, THE COOKING AROMAS ARE FANTASTIC, LOL. CHEERS!!!

P.S. Maybe the fact that I have a NAMED mixing bowl will offset L&VW's HOARDING CRED, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Edit: Hey, "The Man" is also GREAT for marinating large quantities of meat for the BBQ, LOL... when I grill, I cover the grill, 10-4? Because I like leftovers, and anything less seems like a waste of space, cooking fuel, etc. Gotta cover the grill with meat, hot peppers, onions, sweet peppers, etc. ;)

Wait!

You haven't seen my other walls of hardware, even more tools, and multiple cabinets of fasteners...Everything has been "reorganized" since Hurricane Irma passed through, taking most of my power tools--submerging them under four feet of salt water.

Someday, as this turkey-day wanes, I can post a few more photos. ;)

These hoarding pics are like Internet porn for guys who like to putter around and tinker with stuff...

Internet porn for old guys, LOL... ;)

Beautiful morning here, no freeze last night, got two dozen wild birds at the feeders & birdbath this morning...

Got a few chores to do today, the last prep work before my family visits, just some routine vacuuming, laundry, etc. :D

My cat Crackhead is lying in the sun on the view deck, watching all the wild birds, LOL... that knucklehaid!!!

Well, I'd better get started on those chores... that's the problem with chores, they don't do themselves. :(

Got a huge stack of dishes in the sink too, the person who invents self-cleaning dishes will be an overnight billionaire...

I actually have a working dishwasher, but it's more trouble than it's worth to load & unload, and it takes an hour to run a simple cycle... I just do the dishes by hand, it's easier & faster that way. Look at the bright side: there's plenty of cold beer in the immediate forecast, and T-Day leftovers too!!! Cheers!!! :)

Edit: I'll probably wind up using that dishwasher to wash parts when I buy a big ol' thumper, LOL... and why, you ask? Because I CAN, BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

I find this very hard to believe... ;)

I do have a modest hardware hoard, but I live a couple of miles away from the world's best hardware store ("If they don't have it, you're doing it wrong!") so I mostly just buy what I need as I need it.

Haha, Fremont, it's the crack cocaine!!!

Just kidding, I have a "naturally fast metabolism"---used to call it the F-14, but it has slowed down a bit now that I'm past the half-century mark, aye?

Very excited today, I have family members arriving for their holiday visit!!! We're gonna drink good beer, shoot some stick on the primo 8' table, and BBQ, even though I have a truckload of T-Day leftovers in my fridge... meh, they'll keep, and they can make some killer turkey sandwiches for the trip home, LOL. ;)

I think I'll pick up a bottle of blue agave tequila during my upcoming store run, might be some shots in the offing tonight since I haven't seen these family members in four years (and counting). I'm thinking big ol' steaks too with all the trimmings, my brother said he wants to BBQ!!! I'm waiting on word now...

Frankly, I don't care what we eat, whatever I cook will turn out great anyway, LOL... that turkey dinner I made on Thursday has been hitting the proverbial spot ever since, 10-4? I've been powering down plates, and each plate could feed an Ethiopian village for at least a month!!! Meh, I'll burn it off as usual... :D

I'm just jacked about this visit, I've been "standing alone" for over four years and I didn't realize how much I missed my family till they planned this visit!!! This brother flew over from Italy about a week ago, his (adult) kids still live in San Diego... I'm gonna try to convince my niece to move here, I think she'd dig it. :)

We'll see, she can think about it for awhile too, no worries, I'd just like to see her score one of these good gubmint jobs with excellent benefits & retirement, ya know? I don't want her to be in my shoes, trying to drum up some retirement plan at a later stage in life. Meh, at least I'm still free & clear, so that's a plus.

HEY, Y'ALL ENJOY THE WEEKEND, I KNOW I WILL, IT HAS BEEN PRETTY GOOD SO FAR, LOL. NO FOOTBALL EITHER, BUT I DON'T CARE, I'M OVER THAT B.S. FOR NOW... LET THAT NFL REVENUE DROP LIKE A ROCK, THAT'LL TEACH 'EM A LESSON, LOL. CHEERS!!!

I know this guy S.C. knows his stuff, but I thought my measurements for the rudder hdwe pointed to #12 x 1-1/4" screw.
S.C. definitely knows his stuff! But he’s only human ;)
BTW, I haven’t heard a word about those free rudder parts and am beginning to think that deal was too good to be true. Should it work out, what hardware do you need?

Did you know my call sign in the military was Clark? for Clark Kent. Mild mannered. My super powers are making boats out of wood.

I think we lost the OP.

In other work, I use a lot of 3/16" drill bits. As they are mostly 8" long, they will break on occasion. :(

Recently, I found a way to recycle broken 3/16" drill bits: With a little tapping, they can be made to drive into 1/4" copper tubing  . Adding a little Thixo thickened epoxy, the broken bit can be saved for another day! :)

I had purchased what I needed from ebay just before I saw that FREE post - For all I know, I bought the stuff from you. [Herbert Baker Lexington, MA] Good condition, fair price. I'll post more detail at my thread another day. I'd like to think I could resell the extra parts I did not need. I think the lower rudder plate (the part I needed) has to be the most valuable part of collection of items. I assume it is the first thing that falls off in the water or during transport as the backer block rots away.
