Christmas sailing

Hi everyone:

I'm new here so i'm sorry if this has already been canvassed.

I'm a new to laser. Full rig. I've been competing in eastern Canada in 420 for the last 3 years. My family is looking at a vacation south at Christamas (i'm 16).

Does anyone have any suggestions for a destination that would be near a good sailing venue?

I see lots in Florida (i'm on the east coast), but i'd also be interested in Caribbean possibilities. Someone told me there was an excellent laser school in Mexico but i can't find it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Zach

ps ... a situation with 420 would be possssibly of interest and I do know about the orange bowl in Miami.

I would look into Cabarete in the Dominican Republic. There's a pretty active training center there.

Thanks for the lead. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this program? Any comments would be helpful

Several people have written very positively about their experiences over there on this forum. Just use the Search function (in the upper bar) with "Cabarete" as input.

In addition, Tillerman has blogged about the Laser Training Center:

Just found out that LaserPerformance started a club (Sail Laser) at the US Sailing Center in Coconut Grove, near Miami. Quite new, so I can't report on that endeavor. Something to consider though.

Yep...I see one of the coaches that coached me at the North Americans last summer in 420.

My only concern is whether i'm up to it yet. I competed in 420 for the last 3 years and i've just moved to laser this fall....at this point my boat handling skills are still on a big learning curve. This may be at a higher level than I am at the moment.

To be honest, I wouldn't fork out the money for a trip/camp like this until I had some time in the boat and a bit of a base built. You would then be able to take better advantage of camps like those that have been named.

If there's a club program you can join in (where are you exactly? I'm in Halifax) and get the basics down, I'd go for that first. After a summer in the boat, with some more sailing under your belt, you'll be able to decide if you want to pursue it and then, maybe, you can go for an expensive camp like these.

Sailing full rig at sixteen, after sailing a 420, I'm going to have to ask you how big you are. I could be wrong, but I have a sneaking suspicion you might be a bit small for a full rig. Maybe not.
