Bailer operation check

Hi,

Is there a way to test/check to see if a bailer is working? (other than sailing)

I'm restoring at '68. The nut is frozen and before I cut it off, I was just wondering if there is a way to check..

Thanks

Stuart,

Is the bailer plug open or closed? If it is closed, you are out of luck. Open, you can pour water into the cockpit and see if it runs out. If it drains, you are half way there. Step 2 is to see if the ball (backcheck) is still inside the bailer (look from the outside). Step 3 will take two people. Place a hose at the bottom of the bailer (outside) and with low pressure, see if water flows freely (ball missing) or is hindered (ball working) into the cockpit. You may have to seal the bailer/hose connection with your hand.

The only problem with a frozen bailer plug in the open position is that water will still enter the cockpit when stopped or moving slowly. The bailer only works when there is enough speed to create a low pressure area behind the bailer (usually on a downwind reach). Bottom line, you will probably have to replace the bailer.

See the message titled "Frozen Scupper" from a few days ago (7-6-05) for info on replacing the bailer.

Thanks for the reply. It does not drain any water from the cockpit, so I'll assume it not working and can not be repaired.

Where do most folks get their parts?

Thanks

Sean,

Vanguard (http://www.teamvanguard.com/2005/base/index.asp) is the manufacter of the parts, so check their site for a dealer near you. If there is not a dealer locally, try APS (http://www.apsltd.com/default.asp), Wind Line Sails (http://www.windline.net/index.html), Layline or other online sites. You won't get a break on price from anybody as the price is set by Vanguard (P/N 79260, price about $38.85 plus postage). You might also try contacting Herb (see post-"Sunfish Parts" from a few weeks ago), he just obtained a bunch of stuff and may have a complete new bailer assembly for less.
