Class Politics ba da BOOM

ok here's a question for the masses:

aside from being illegal, is it possible to make
a new Boom from an old top section?
They are the same diameter and wall
thickness, no?
If you were meticulous at laying out the
fittings and were smart enough to get
the fittings on in the right place, a boom
sleeve in there and all your rivets tight. . .

what would be the difference?

If you could match the same measurements, most importantly length, as the spec boom and placement of all the hardware most importantly the exact position of the kicker mount, I dont think that there would be any problems, assuming use for non-sanctioned events, local club use only. However I'm not certain that the weight would be the same.... what exactly is the thickness of the top sections skin?. Of course that leads to the obvious question of rigidity / flexability. After all we all know how flexable the top section is.

It's the same section. I have and I know a number of other people who have used booms built from broken top sections and haven't had a problem with measurements - however you can ask this question over in the "Measurers" forum and get a quasi official ruling.
