Attaching boom

Is there a good, reliable way to attach the boom to the mast using hardware rather than relying on the outhaul tension to keep the boom in place?
Forgive me if this is heresy for real Laser sailors. We rig on a dock and it's often hard to manage getting the sail on when the boom won't stay attached to the mast. It just slides off the gooseneck. And I don't want to tighten the vang until the sail is on of course.
I have seen rig variations where the cunningham attaches to a block at the bottom of the boom (up from the vang). Maybe that's the answer? On our laser the cunningham is just a line running up through the tack grommet and back down to a fairlead on deck.

one idea would be to attach the clew first then connnect the gooseneck and kicker then wack on a bit of kicker tension to hold it on should work (if you have an adjustable outhaul you could loosen to connect gooseneck)
