ARC1 rig

I brought up this same topic 6 months ago and likewise it was crickets. I'd love some more chatter about the rigs. And foiling. And everything else wacky. why not?

But I think you'll find these forums to be very skeptical of non class standard stuff, and most especially of dubious envelope-pushing tech that creates pissing matches between LP and foreign competitors (especially if Olympics are in the next 18 months). After all, there is a whole forum about "politics"....which says something.

My gut sense is that the longer the original design survives into to the realm of "obsolescence" (while other designs evolve), the more entrenched the various powers-that-be become, as the stakes of change grow ever higher. I think we can agree the MKII sail is not exactly 21st century tech.

Personally, I'm happy to chat about "I don't plan to race"-oriented questions (and a decent proportion of us are secretly "recreation-only")--but for 95% of this forum ARC-type stuff is a complete non-starter conversation. This is still a fiercely one-design community. I guess they'd say if you want to screw around there are a million other boats for that.

By the way, you posted this on December 5th. There have been 170 views and zero replies (other than mine).

I couldn't come up with a better metaphor.

I get it that the main focus of this forum is for Class Lasers and the racing thereof. That said, I am still smitten with my Laser after 35 years sailing it, and love it for the basic design and performance. Since I don't race, I have found it to be a perfect "Sport Boat" for my needs and yes, I've made some modifications to it here and there to improve performance and enjoyment, and am very pleased at the $$ savings and options (like the big square-head) on "illegal" sails. Any discussion or queries outside the Class Rules seems to get trounced quickly - or ignored - on the Forum, so I guess us outliers might seek to discuss things like the ARC1 somehow outside this Forum?

I think the main reason that this rig hasn't gotten much traction here (or elsewhere) is that
  • 1. It's (quite) expensive
  • 2. It's not readily available

So? Everyone needs to bail the boat. Everyone looking for spare parts is faced with questionable options. In contrast, no one "needs" an expensive alternative/experimental rig.

The "ARC" rigs were no more than LaserPerformance's countermove to Bethwaite's "C" rig development. The fact that they're nowhere to be seen at LP's webstore is telling. Shouldn't be a wonder if no one's discussing something that no one's buying.
