Access port questions

Are 6" ports too big for the deck of a Sunfish (asthetic and practical) or should 5" be used (I have water inside)?
Is installing a 6" port with a sock best for the front and/or back of the cockpit? I have a 1968 without the back compartment and may want to install a hiking strap later.
Are stainless screws or bolts used and what length is best for the ports?

I used 8" access ports on mine, a small washer on each side to shim it up, 1/2 plywood about 2" bigger than the hole, 3M 5200 to fill the slight gap and seal/glue the hole tight and SS wood screws to fasten it all together. You can see part of the front one in this picture. I needed the extra room for access to do repairs and I wanted a little larger hole to stuff supplies in.
