(Campbell Sailing)

One race in two days is not a pretty picture for any regatta. Kieler Woche especially is legendary for its windy, rainy and long days on the water. Today could not have had less in terms of breeze. Being the longest day of the year (sunrise was at 445am and sunset around 10pm), we were [...]

Having lived at Schilksee for a while (in the mid of the 90ties) I say, the weather there they now have is not to unusual at June. The Jetstreams, this year, are runinng a bit much to the north over Europe, so, one low pressure area aft another crossed Germany during the past 4 weeks. The Forecast of today does say: the sailors get sun and warmer temps, each day a bit more of this week. The wind will be low but rises up for Wednesday (northerly winds), the last day of the races for the olympic classes.

Yesterday, Sunday, there was no race for most of the classes, in reason of low winds. Those of the active sailors who did got the information by chance, better have taken the wonderful chance to drive to Hamburg by car or train. At Hamburg downtown (one of the best areas to go shopping at GER), yesterday it has been one of those few free Sunday-Shopping-Days....

At the following Link you get some very nice photos of Kiel Week 2009:

Hi,
for those who are interested in:

The next 2 days one is able to view online the finals of the olympic classes at the the website of Kiel Week.
Attention: One need a highspeed internet account (video stream is to much for narrow-band-internet)!
Here is the direct link (if you klick to the link you see a map of the Bay of Kiel. You have to klick to the "+" button, at the left edge of the map, to "zoom in"):

I guess, the races will be done between 09:00 a.m. and 18:00 p.m "Berlin Summer Time"/BST*.

{*: F.e.: 10:00 a.m. BST at Kiel is: 09:00 a.m. London Summer Time = 04:00 a.m. New York Time = 01:00 a.m. San Francisco Time = 05:00 a.m. Rio d. Janeiro Time = 10:00 a.m. Johannesburg Time = 12:00 a.m. Moscow Time = 14:00 p.m. Mumbay(/Bombay)Time = 17:00 p.m. Tokio Time = 18:00 Sydney Time and Seoul Time = 20:00 Wellington Time.}

Yesterday, the wind again was to low for serious races, but today and Wednesday the wind will be shifty from northerly directions at 3-4 Bft, 15 hours of sun (23 degrees Celsius airtemp) the forecast says. Perfect weather at Kiel.

Have Fun

Okay,
today, the last day of the races for the olympic classes, did not start with sun. Clouds and a "sort of fog" came over the East Sea from Denmark. But this will end soon and the active sailors get much sun at 19°C air on the water and 3-4 Bft wind from northeast. Perfect "Kaiserwetter" (a German saying for best weather) to run the medal races direct at the bay nearby the harbour of Schilksee.

Here is an official press report of yesterday in english:

Some small video footage is already available here:
http://www.kieler-woche.de/segeln/segelvideos/kiel_tv.htm

The 2nd video of the interview the two GER female Radial Laserites is nice, in reason you are able to have some nice impressions from the sailing fleet of the Radials.

Sure they will add some more video stuff later the week there. The source is the open free TV project of Kiel (Offener Kanal Kiel). They broadcast "live" at Kiel TV-Cable only, 2 times every day (the www.okkiel.de "videostream"-functionality at their homepage does not work, I found out. One only is able to get the "Kielweek" internet radio during the day: http://www.okkiel.de/ki/hoeren/livestream_kiel_fm/index.php )

The non-sailing program of Kiel Week offers a lot of video stuff, too:

Aft 5 Races at the Standard, Paul Goodison seems to be unbeatable. He won all five races. 2nd is "Kiwi" Bullot Mike, 3rd Andi Geritzer (AUT).

At the womens Radial racing fleet, Paige Railey (USA) leads aft 5 races, 2nd: Evi van Aker (BEL), 3rd: Anna Tunnicliffe-Funk (USA).

Ciao
