2005 Regatta Schedule

From past experience, does anyone know when the official list becomes available? When is is posted? And is it mailed to class members?

Thanks,
Tim

Sunfish regatta organizers were asked to send in details of their events to their regional reps by the end of January. So the official list should be ready soon, I hope. It is usually mailed with the first Windward Leg of the year and posted on the class website too.

Last year (2004) the schedule was posted May 5 (which was plenty late). Perhaps the class will do better this year.

Here is the tentative Schedule for the Midwest Region.

Sure would be nice to see the rest of the regions. I just joined the sunfish class last summer so I have no prior opinion BUT....it seems like for a class this big and active, that the schedule would be up by now. Has this been considered a problem by the class association? I'm not criticizing, just looking for the info.

Tim,

For what it’s worth here is a link to the updated New England Schedule.

2005 New England Calendar

Putting together the National calendar is a very time consuming and unnerving task. With that being said, we are “Breaking In” (or just plain breaking  ) a new National Regatta Organizer this year, Susan Mallows.

I agree that having the information made available as early as possible is paramount to a successful season and I know Susan understands that as well. Keep I mind that on the National level you can only report what you are given, and on the regional level you can’t always get the answers you are looking for WHEN you want them. For instance, my submission for the New England region is conspicuously missing Junior events. The organizing authority for Junior Events here in New England has not setup their summer schedule yet.

Perhaps for next season we could incorporate a type of “As of now” calendar, something that gets updated once a week and gets more comprehensive as we move along.

For now rest assured the complete and comprehensive National Calendar will be available soon.

Hi,
As the Southeast webmaster I have not gotten any information from my class rep about the schedule. Rose sent out an email earlier this year with last year schedule asking for new dates/corrections/additions. I have not seen the finished version. When I get it I will post it at http://southeast.sunfishforum.com.

Also, I will probably post all the info on the Sunfish Forum Calenday (see link at the top of this and all pages) and I suggest all representatives do. Any member can post a new calendar event, but I will give reps special permissions so they can go back and make changes/corrections to the calendar if they are interested. Email me for more info on that.

Thats all for now!

Thanks; we all realize that a lot of volunteer (!) work is involved in getting these schedules finalized and posted/mailed.

Wow, ask and you shall receive.

Thanks to all those getting the info together! Maybe we just needed to get the little snowball rolling down the hill.

Has anyone noticed the schedule in the Northeast? You used to be able to sail regattas in New England, New York and the Mid Atlantic regions. I do not think there was anyone that went between the three, but there were plenty of people that straddled two regions. This summer the regional reps have conflicting regattas on June 11-12. The only other event in the summer is Wequaquet Lake. Then there are four regionals in September and October on consecutive weekends. That is horrible... I thought this was a summer sport. Are we trying to prevent kids from sailing?

You raise a good point Barney. But it's not as easy as you might think to set up a regatta schedule that will please everyone.

About 5 or 6 years ago, my good friend Bill Betts raised the same point of major regatta conflicts in the north-east. In fact he felt so strongly about it that he got himself elected as the Regional Representative for the Mid-Atlantic Region. And he did a great job working with his opposite numbers in the New York and New England Regions to try and synch up the schedules for Regionals from the 3 regions to avoid conflicts.

In 2002 I took over from Bill as Mid-Atlantic Rep and also tried to make sure that the 3 regions had their Regionals on reasonable dates that didn't conflict. I kept in touch with my opposite numbers in the other regions over the winter as the schedules firmed up. But it wasn't as easy as I thought. We were all quite constrained by which yacht clubs were prepared to run Regionals and when they were prepared to host them. When you only have a limited number of clubs prepared to host a regatta like this and they are only prepared to do them on certain dates, sometimes the choice is to accept these offers or risk not having a Regional scheduled at all. My biggest screw-up was to schedule one Regional that almost conflicted with the North Americans - or at least made it impractical for Juniors to do both events.

This year we have a new Mid-Atlantic Rep, Connie Miller, who has done a great job of scheduling 3 Regionals for the Mid-Atlantic that are geographically spread out well across a large region, that are spaced through the year, and that include one at Metedeconk River YC that is in a part of the region that has not been all that active in hosting Sunfish regattas recently. As for opportunities for Juniors in the region to sail in the summer months, the Mid-Atlantic Region is hosting the North Americans in early July (hosted by the indefatigible Connie again) - and the 3 event SANJL Junior Series is running through July and August. I'd say that's a pretty fine schedule.

So yes there is one conflict of Regional dates in the greater north-east. But please focus on the positive. There's a lot of great sailing opportunities out there and you could never attend all the regattas scheduled, even if you wanted to. Please support your hard-working class officers and thank them for setting up another fantastic year of Sunfish sailing.

And if you think you can do better, run for office yourself.

Well put, Derek. Your (volunteer) job is one that usually only gets a response when something isn't going right. You have a HUGE region to oversee and a couple billion regattas to coordinate. So to you, I personally say thank you and good job.

Cookie Pimp's link to the florida calendar is really nice. It would be an awesome feat to have a master list for the whole class in such an easy to use format.

On Barney's post, I think he is mainly referring to the fact that the kids are back in school in September when some of the regionals are scheduled (events that would have kids fleet(s) or designations, or possibly family travel). Not that it was ever a problem when I was a kid...school...sailing....hmmm there's a hard choice. I realize that school is not what it used to be though.

This forum seems to be gathering a lot of attention from the regional reps on a whole variety of issues so it is definitely working.

:D

The overall US and World regatta schedule is one that is always a challenge and work in action. While the goal is always to have the local, regional, national and international events spaced out in a way that allows all to participate, there are local, regional, national and international Sunfish and non-Sunfish events which affect what can be accomplished.

A for instance: the Chicago NOOD is the 3rd weekend in June. Easily 1/2 of the sailors from any given Sunfish Midwest Regional (and not surprisingly, from many, many other regions) will be found on something far bigger than a Sunfish that weekend, playing the game on another platform (myself included). This makes that weekend a very poor choice for a Sunfish regatta in the Midwest if the hosts desire a good turnout. Same is true for Chicago-Mackinac and Port Huron-Mackinac weekends in July. The Masters, Womens, North Americans and Worlds also pull sailors away from events locally, and often affect the weekend before and weekend after as participants need time to regroup after a road trip.

At the same time, calls to start our scheduling in September so that all can be finalized by January 1 has met with great protests. The protests come in part "because we've always done it this way," but also the reality of summer clubs simply not having Board meetings where approvals can be derived, some clubs wanting to synch with other organizations that have relatively late final scheduling dates, etc., contribute to the difficulties experienced by regatta schedulers and coordinators.

Now, IF the Class were to make a decision as a whole to move up the scheduling process, clearly define the process at least a year in advance, and communicate the progress regularly, it is something that likely could be accomplished. Would there be a year of adjustment (likely with "fewer regattas making the printed schedule")? Heck, yeah! But after that first year, in all likelihood, participants would get the message, get organized, adjust, and life would go on.

If there is enough call for such action, it is something that could be enacted for 2007.

I throw this out as food for thought. I've had the same concerns as all in this list for the 20+ years I've been in the Class. Comments anyone?

Sincerely,

Gail
