Radial v Standard - different clew height ?

We had some wind at QMSC on Saturday, maybe 8 knotts. They squeezed four races in on Sat as the forecast for Sunday was not looking good. I did OK for my first big event in a dinghy for 17 years. The starts were very difficult, I couldn't find any space on the line, think I'm going to have to...

    Teflon mast wear strips

Nigel, Yes, the PTFE sheet is easy enough to get hold of. I also bought some and cut my own discs and managed to cover the cost of the sheet by selling a few to other club members :). The tape is hard to get hold of in small (short) quantities. I'll keep checking on ebay and hope to get an...

Radial v Standard - different clew height ?

There should be quite a few radials at Queen Mary SC tomorrow - 17th Oct for the Masters Inland Championship so I'll have a good look at them and maybe take a few measurements. It's my first Masters event so I'm really looking forward to it, my kids think it's just a bunch of old folk trying to...

    Teflon mast wear strips

I found a supplier of PTFE tape with an adhesive backing, problem is they want over £50 for a 30m roll. I asked for a sample and hope they will send enough to put around my mast. If it works out OK I might buy a roll and see if I can sell some to the UK/Europe Laser community. The tape I hope...

Radial v Standard - different clew height ?

Hi, I tried a few searches on the forum for this question without success. I recently bought a used Radial lower section and mark 5 sail. I rigged the boat to check that all was OK and noticed that the boom seemed much higher at the aft end compared to my standard. I measured my radial and...

    Teflon mast wear strips

Thinking about it some more - the vang probably has nothing to do with the wear on the mast as all the vang tension is contained on the mast (unlike some other dinghies where the controls and led onto the hull. The wear on the mast is most likely attributed to sailing with max mainsheet tension...

    Teflon mast wear strips

Hi, I notice that my lower mast, which is only nine months old, is showing quite a lot of wear at the bottom two inches at the front and the same on the back of the mast at just below deck level (same for the mast tube). Nothing really unusual here, caused by sand, grit etc.. and sailing with...

How to determine if I have a mk5 or mk6 radial sail

OK, thanks for all the replies. There seems to be some difference of opinion on the mark 5 having blue corners or not which I think maybe due to different sailmakers in the UK. Anyway, I'm pretty happy to know that I have a mark 5 sail as there is no curved reinforcement in the corners. :)

How to determine if I have a mk5 or mk6 radial sail

Hi, I just took delivery of a used Laser Radial lower mast section and Radial sail. I usually sail the full rig but when it's windy some of my club's full rig sailors drop down to the Radial, so now I can do the same and compete on equal terms. The previous owner of the Radial sail did not...

    Ratchet switch

Hi, took the block off, gave it a good wash in cold, fresh water, works fine now. Thanks for the advice.

    Ratchet switch

Thanks for the advice, I'll try giving it a good wash and/or soak in silicone spray. Abersoch-solo, I think you are right about the source of the boats, I remember Pete had several Lasers all around the 189xxx range. I've been very pleased with mine, no problems until last weekend when I decided...

    Ratchet switch

No, this one is definately blue in colour and has the "Laser" name and Laser trademark logo on it. That's why I thought it would be a well know block. Having said that I haven't seen another one like it at my club, but most of the Lasers here are quite a bit older. It works fine as long as the...

    Ratchet switch

Sorry, no picture. As this block actually has "Laser" plus the Laser logo on it I thought it might be a common piece of equipment, maybe standard on UK Lasers ?

    Ratchet switch

Hi, I've got a question about the ratchet switch on my Laser block. The ratchet block has "Laser" on it and is blue, I guess it's the original one with the boat (early 2007) ?. It has a red switch to engage the ratchet. The switch slides easliy between on and off, but the switch can also slide...

Up wind ouhaul setting (Radial Rig) HELP!

I read the same thing in Paul Goodison's book and my thoughts were the same - 20cm seems a bit full for light wind. I use a standard rig but he also states 20cm for this too. I also have Ben Ainslie's "Laser campaign manual" where he specifies the same setting as Paul Goodison, but he does make...

    touch up paint for deck?

I'm in the UK and recently spent some time looking for a match for the old off-white colour. It seems that you can buy gel coat in the two Laser grey coulurs - Dawn Grey and Velor Grey, but for the off-white you need to buy the off-white gel coat kit which contains 3 different shades which you...

Outhaul block rivited directly to boom

Hi everyone, My newish Laser (189402) has a block riveted to the front of the boom (port side). I guess this is used to take the outhaul down to the deck block. This is how I rigged it and it works really well, but I'm wondering if this is legal as all other Lasers I have seen have the block...
