do you empty the mast step of water after every use? if so, what do you use when solo?

Most water ends up in the mast step while washing down. In summer I do not bother to take it out. I dry it in winter using a sponge on a stick but because my cover has a cutout at the fairlead rain water runs in again. One time I uncovered the boat to find the mast step completely solid with a...

How do you "dead end" a line?

Merrily's knot sounds like the "double overhand stopper knot" that I favour for the boom block, but I like the "barrel knot" name better.

    something loose in my hull

Thank you all for your thoughts, and appologies for my flight of fancy. By sight and feel through the transom drain plughole I managed to determine that the rear cubitainer is loose. I guess I can just leave it alone.

    Light Wind Sail Settings

As a beginner you are doing really well to match other sailors around the course even if it was as you say a struggle. It is always a struggle to beat an experienced laser sailor. Light air sailing takes a lot of skill and this is only gained by experience and knowledge. There are countless...

    Gelcoat colour match

I am pretty sure vela grey is the correct colour for a 190K boat. Dawn grey was the earlier colour. I have used both and they matched perfectly.

    something loose in my hull

Well as I turned the boat over it clattered about as it bounced off the inside walls, maybe like one or two decent sized pebbles, which is why I initially thought it could be resin or a piece of wood. I just wondered if anyone had ever heard of snails crawling in through the drain hole. I will...

    something loose in my hull

The other day when turning my boat over I heard some rattling from inside the hull. My initial thought was that it could only be a big piece of resin or a detatched piece of the bracing wood. The boat is only a couple of years old and looks and feels perfect so I cannot see why bits inside would...

    Racing Etiquette

I feel your suffering SailNJ but if this guy is close covering you he cannot be much better than you can he. It sound like you sail against him often so use him as a training opportunity to develop ways to pass him. Cover him with your sail on a run and time your move for the inside mark...

    Clew Sleeve or Velcro Strap

I prefer the velcro strap, mainly because I find it easier to rig with my setup. I don't like the integral hook which comes with the clew sleeve as I always worry it will come off. I will concede that the sleeve is smoother to adjust on the water, but only if you have it perfectly set up, and I...

    Racing Etiquette

I must say I am a bit puzzled by some of the replies. I am never annoyed by people trying to cover me. It is surely part of the skill of racing to be able to deal with a covering boat by counter tactics. There will be plenty of opportunities to shake them during the course of a race. It is a lot...

    Rivet for mast base plug?

The last time I renewed my standard and radial base plugs I am pretty sure they were slightly different sizes to suit the mast thickness. I almost made the mistake of using standard shaped rivets until I realized I needed countersunk ones. No special rivet gun needed as long as it will accept...

    clew strap & shackle

I flirted with the metal clew sleeve but reverted back to my original arrangement because the hook used with the sleeve is harder to fit and does not allow the boom to be released during rigging. I use the combined block and hook which came with my outhaul upgrade. When rigging I fit the boom...

    mainsheet tangling

Two simple mainsheet habits which I have convinced myself are of help. 1) Soon after launching, sheet in to a beat and throw the spare mainsheet over the side, pull it in again snaking it back into the cockpit out to get rid of the inevitable twists formed while rigging up. This also makes it...

    Help!!

As Merrily has hinted at, you are probably looking at the typical moulding deformation charactorised by a squarish lump protruding from the hull just below the mast step. It would be wrong to fair this out and re-gel since this is a normal feature.

Which one, Harken vang or Holt vang?

I think the Harken looks better but I have used the Holt for about 4 years racing every week and never had a problem with it. I am just noticing now that the cleat is starting to wear the sheet a little. The many club owned Lasers I have sailed in the USA have all had Harken vangs (or else the...

harken boom sleeve/clew hook or clew strap

A while back I bought a laser with the new sleeve fitted. It kept sticking so in the end I replaced it with my tried and tested clew strap. The sleeve was actually harder to undo than my normal clew hook. Needless to say I am not a fan of the sleeve.

    O-ring dimension

I bought some replacements a while back. The OD was about 16mm or 5/8 inch. The thickness about one mm. I assume this would be the same as an unstretched original.
