    Charleston, SC sailing questions

I will be in Charleston the week of July 8, and am planning on bringing my Laser. A couple of questions: Are there any beer can races that week? Any recommendations for a public ramp conducive to Laser launching? Thanks.

    District Web Pages

Has anyone thought about making an easy way to get to the district home pages from here? I'm thinking a list of buttons, labeled "District 1", District 2", etc. would be a nice. Pressing a button opens a new tab in the browser window, and loads the specified district's home page. Simple, but...

Class Politics Field Trip to LP Rhode Island!

Not to hijack this thread, but here in the US, there are over 20,000 laws regarding the manufacture/distribution/purchase/ownership of guns. There is no "lack of US gun regulations" - sorry, Rob. Yes, we have many more freedoms (and usually lower crime) as far as ownership of firearms goes...

Orientation of bunks for deck down storage

Mine run perpendicular to the centerline of the boat, at the mast step and rear of the cockpit. These points have bracing between the deck and hull. My bunks are 12" wide and have 4" of open cell foam on them (plenty of "give"), so matching the angle of the deck is not super-critical.

Boom Rivets and Transom Drain Plug

No, don't drill through the entire boom - bolt only to the bottom side, using the existing holes. Do a search - there are plenty of threads talking about how to through-bolt the center mainsheet block. Tedious, but not difficult.

Boom Rivets and Transom Drain Plug

Through-bolt the mainsheet blocks - much stronger that way. Best fix for the drain plug is to oversize drill the hole, fill with epoxy (West System), drill, and put a screw in. You can go on West's site for instructions on how to do this - really quite easy.

    Racing Etiquette

America's Cup racing is match racing (as opposed to fleet racing.) A different game, with different rules and strategies.

    Sailing in oil--America's problem

It seems the media is feeding very different information than they are feeding us...

    Sailing in oil--America's problem

Not to get too political - Unlike what the media is apparently reporting, only small portion of Americans are making claims against BP. Most of us over here like you Brits. However, inflammatory, inaccurate statements like that will change people's mind. Remember, this isn't SA...

    Novice sail/ rigging questions

You could rig up a halyard system with the existing 2-piece mast. I'm not sure how low you could get the sail with the existing sleeve, though. Alternatively, you could add an external sail track to the mast (not sure how this would work due to the bendy nature of the Laser mast.) Add the...

Just checking on traveller fairlead repair...

And, as 49208 said, make sure you sand the inside of the aluminum fairleads - they are quite rough as cast. (A little 400 grit will make them smooth as a baby's butt!)

Just checking on traveller fairlead repair...

I'm not sure what you mean by "better choice". I use an oval head screw (or flathead) instead of the factory installed round head, as the aluminum fittings have countersink holes, not flat-surfaced holes. Does that answer your question?

Fairlead Block Plate (outhaul & cunningham)

If you mean the screws mounting the plate to the deck, you need to drill the hole out to a larger size, then fill with thickened West System epoxy. Once hardened, drill a hole for your mounting screw. Check their web site for lots of information about how to do this. It really is not...

    clam cleat question

That's an awesome repair! Obviously, it will never fail. Too bad it's not class legal. I wish the rules allowed for reasonable repairs like the one you did. Oh well. (That's another discussion I don't want to start!)

    Interlux perfection

You could also try pulling the tape off within a couple of minutes of painting it. I started doing this when painting interior surfaces in my house (I know, not the same type of paint) and it alleviated the paint-creep-under-the-tape problem.

Mainsheet cam cleat parts needed for 1975 Laser

I have never seen parts of cam cleats available - you will have to purchase the entire cleat. Harken, Schaeffer, Ronstan (and probably others) make cleats that will work just fine. Look at a Harken 150 - I do not know the model numbers from the other manufacturers. FWIW, I believe your swivel...

    Sailing in oil--America's problem

Actually, the POTUS (or at least the US gov'mnt) is at least partly to blame. You see, drilling for oil within the US is one of the most regulated activities - as the regulating party, which charges license fees, fines, etc., they have taken on the position of responsibility. Unfortunately...

XD clew hook vs. tied block

Your first picture shows the 2 clew hooks I have, the older, shorter one on the bottom, and recently purchased (2008?) one on the top. I bought my new hook by itself (not with the clew sleeve) - I think the hook is the same, with or without the clew sleeve.
