If all you need is the wooden tiller, it would be easy to make one since it is just a straight piece of wood. Get a piece of wood like teak. oak or mahogany, and shape with a rasp or plane. Or find a local wood worker to make one.
If your boat has a wood hatch, it is not the same model boat as Johndesz's 2006 boat, and a hatch that fits a mod 3 boat won't necessarily fit a mod 1 boat. You will need to measure carefully to find a plastic hatch to retrofit to a mod1 boat, but you could easily use your existing wood hatch...
There are hatches available from companies like Tempress available from many marine supply companies like West Marine, Overton's and others. They are expensive, but you can probably find a better price with lower shipping or free shipping by doing an internet search or visiting a local marine...
Kerrcat14.2K is correct-a cunningham attaches to the sail, and the downhaul attaches to the boom. My boom was always tensioned against the lower stop, since the boom kicker would push the boom up and out of the mast otherwise. I'm new to sailing full scale boats, so I'm no expert but I set the...
This is my 1984 14.2. The gooseneck is free to slide up and is held down by a downhaul which keeps the boom 90 degrees to the mast. You can also see the side stay which appears to be on the second hole from the bottom. You might also consider a boom kicker like this which holds the boom up...
I don't think anyone sells a replacement hatch. I had a 1984 14.2 that had a hatch but it was rotten, so I made a new one out of some 1/4" lexan I had. You could also use starboard plastic. Make a pattern out of cardboard. The hatch slots under the wood piece at the top and just has a turn...
I had one of those trailers 10 or more years ago and everything lined up and worked properly and didn't fail at 65mph. I replaced the hinge with a 1/8" thick, 3'long steel angle so the trailer didn't fold and added a 1/2" plywood base which stiffened it up nicely. I also added a 2" square...
The Expo has a rotating mast that lets the sail be reefed to any point, so it can't use a normal Baby Bob type float, and I have never seen a float on the expo mast. Now that I have the boat, I might be able to figure out a float o0f some kind.
This forum seems to be pretty worthless-questions are rarely answered. If anyone is interested I found a video by RYA that showed that I did everything wrong. First, if the wind is blowing hard enough for a capsize, don't sail directly downwind, but instead do a broad reach to avoid the death...
In January I gave up on finding an Expo 14.2 and bought a 1984 Capri 14.2 and documented here its refit. As might be expected, after finishing the boat and sailing it once, an Expo 14.2 became available at a great price, so I bought it and sold the Capri the next day on Craigslist. I sailed...
There are many mounts available from the different suppliers such as West Marine that are less expensive. Most that I have seen have the mounting board parallel to the mounting surface, and since the transom is vertical, they will require some wedges on the mounting surface to allow the motor to...
I'm getting a 2003 14.2 Expo on Saturday, and Catalina says they are more stable with the carbon mast that bends in a puff and spills the wind. Any owners out there who have experience with the boat? Would you still suggest a mast head float of some kind? My Mod 1 capri will soon be for sale...
I launched my 1984 Capri 14.2 for the first time today after a few weeks of outfitting and renewing its equipment. Coming from an RS Quba with no jib and a simpler setup, I felt at first like someone trying to keep a bunch of plates spinning on sticks as I paddled out into water deep enough to...
I don't have a 12.5 so can't help with dimensions, but if I made a plywood daggerboard I would add a layer of 4-6ounce fiberglass cloth over the wood with the epoxy.
In case anyone is interested, I found a North sails Capri 14.2 tuning guide that says the mast rake should be set by having the forestay at its maximum length of 15' 3 3/4" per class rules. I fixed my forestay to this measurement.
