Is there Laser racing in Charleston, SC for adults?

I found out that there is active laser racing in the area, and if I understood correctly there is weekly racing on Tuesday evenings in addition to many weekend regattas within driving range (like in Savannah and such). The downside is that you have to be a member of a yacht club to story your...

Can you bring a phone along or papers when you race?

At first I cared about accurate information being posted in response to the OPs question, and then I became intrigued by the bizarre insistence that a cell phone is a compass. Finally, I was offended by the repeated insistence that because a person is equipped to cheat, that he or she will...

Can you bring a phone along or papers when you race?

No it's Alan that is concerned about having cell phones on board. I have no issue with it at all. Hm... I don't dispute much of that, but... Have you seen any of the litigation going on?

Can you bring a phone along or papers when you race?

Let me blow your mind. You have kitchen knives in a drawer. That knife is capable of cutting food. You could therefore use it to cut food. If it can cut food, it can cut a person. You could therefore use it to cut a person and kill them. But you don't do that, do you? Or will you advocate...

Can you bring a phone along or papers when you race?

I am absolutely not the one making things up and I absolutely read the class rules. I even correctly parsed them. Here is the entire text of rule 22: 22. COMPASS, ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT AND TIMING DEVICES (a) One compass mounted on any part of the deck or the cockpit is permitted if the hull...

Can you bring a phone along or papers when you race?

I'm not at all concerned about having a phone on board. I'm certainly not arguing that anything not covered by the fundamental rule is permitted. There are plenty of rules to cover a variety of things. My point is that the wording of the fundamental rule qualifies it's scope to the boat's...

Can you bring a phone along or papers when you race?

Wow, so much stuff here it's hard to know where to begin... In summary: 1 - Class rules and the RRS only apply while actually racing. 2 - "Use" does not equate to "possess" and there is support for this in the class rules. 3 - The rule against outside assistance is not part of laser class...

Making a dolly - can I use a sunfish plan?

Yeah I had the same thought, that it's only 6 inches wider. It's also pretty much the same weight and length. If the 1.25 inch schedule 40 has held up for the sunfish I would think that there won't be a problem. I was thinking of making it wider, just to have a wider wheel base to make it a...

Making a dolly - can I use a sunfish plan?

Hey thanks @tag I actually have studied your design pretty carefully. You did a great job. I'm wondering though, was 1.25 inch schedule 40 PVC strong enough, especially for the handle? It looks like you used furniture grade PVC, is that right? If you had it to do again, what mite you do...

Is there Laser racing in Charleston, SC for adults?

Hi All... I'm in the process of relocating from Rhode Island to Charleston, SC. I'm wondering if any of the clobs have Laser racing programs that are not just for kids? Thanks...

    Gelcoat colors

So I have had my laser not even 24 hours yet, and in a windstorm something blew against the humm and made a nick in the gelcoat. Is there a color number chart for hulls from various manufacturers and years?

Making a dolly - can I use a sunfish plan?

From looking around a bit (here and elsewhere) it seems like there are a few nice designed. I like this one: https://sailingforums.com/threads/new-pvc-dolly.18389/ The thread, though, had comments that the centerpiece would bend and also after a few years in the sun the UV weakened the PVC...

Making a dolly - can I use a sunfish plan?

Looking over plans and videos for making a dolly, I see more for sunfish than lasers. I checked and I see that the sunfish is nearly identical in length and weight and about 6 inches less beam. So, is it reasonable to think a sunfish dolly would work just fine?

Exercises specifically for 'Mature' Laser sailors

Old thread and I’m 50s, was in great shape pre-Covid then the gyms closed. I hate to run in the cold and had no squat rack so, I’ll be back on the treadmill, bicycle and the squat rack again. but I’m thinking yoga, planks and (yuck) crunches for laser sailing. Cardio is always good for...

Can you bring a phone along or papers when you race?

Thanks that one seems reasonable. I like the big digits and orange backlighting. Still at $300 people are making good money, and no license issue with the class. But it’s a niche product so I can see why the price is high.

Can you bring a phone along or papers when you race?

Holy crap, I just looked at Intensity. $500 for an electronic compass that is nothing more than an electronic compass!??!!? I think I'll go into business making these... I'll add a timer feature too.

Can you bring a phone along or papers when you race?

Well it's unreasonable to presume that because someone has the ability to cheat that they are in fact cheating, and and such accusation would have to be backed by actual evidence. I think the jury would place the burden on the party making such an accusation, as it's pretty hard to prove a...

    How to add deck hardware?

Hi All... I just bought my first Laser, an older hull that needs to cunningham and outhaul upgrades. Looking at the kits, I see I need to install a double eye / cleat to the deck. My hull has no inspection ports and, at least for now, I prefer not to add one. So, how does someone add deck...
