    Pre-1972 Sunfish rudder

I am not in your area. I'm in South Carolina. I'm thinking I could laminate some white oak to make up a spare blade and bolt it up to my original hardware, as needed. I'm headed to the Outer Banks and I'd hate to get all the way out there and have the rudder break. Maybe that approach is a...

    Pre-1972 Sunfish rudder

SteveMaz, Is this still available? I'm looking for a spare rudder.

    Unfortunate Learning Video

At the risk of derailing this thread, I'll mention that the Keys did not provide ready access to the water, in spite of my contrary expectations. I'm sure there were places, but I guess I needed to do more research on put-ins. We did sail Largo Sound at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park...

    Unfortunate Learning Video

Sorry so late to reply. We've been off trying to sail in the Keys. That was a let down. But we had a fun time in Cape Canaveral. I'm sure I'll regroup on this come warmer days.

    Unfortunate Learning Video

Hey Friends, We sailed Lake Norman this weekend and I encountered a couple moments where I did not understand what the boat was doing and how I should respond. I thought, I need some finer instruction now that we've been sailing and erring unaided for almost two years. Where would you point a...

    Brand New 2021 Sunfish. Questions

Yeah and I'm a newbie! Don't listen to me. I was just trying to find something, anything to say. Ha!

    Brand New 2021 Sunfish. Questions

I suppose it is a small lake you might swim across? ;) If not, how about some basic safety hardware? Whistle? Distress flag? Waterproof case? Flashlight?

Stern wheels instead of a full dolly?

I use my canoe portage dolly that I built from an old baby bike trailer chassis. Amazing the load we put on it. Positioned in the center and the boat becomes weightless. But it would not work for launching but maybe 2-3 times before it seized up. Probably not helpful enough an idea to...

1970 Sunfish Repair - Needing help to bringing order to the chaos!

That was the "during" phase, so it looks pretty bad. The gel is flowing off the rusty metal and taking rust with it. It is now primed and looking better, but the pits will always remain.

1970 Sunfish Repair - Needing help to bringing order to the chaos!

The trailer repair is moving off dead center now. We tried the Rustoleum Rust Dissolver gel after lots and lots of angle grinder work. In fact it took more than one grinder. I guess it was just time for the Makita to go. One complaint (shall we not always have at least one...

1970 Sunfish Repair - Needing help to bringing order to the chaos!

Maybe so, you know better. But this was a touch more like bait and switch. The indication was that the parts were available to ship "within 24 hours" , then they were not. It was definitely a screw machine supplier problem. I assume China, but I don't know. 4 months is a long time to wait...

    Been Busy working on Fiberglass

Well that's one explanation for how this kind of damage can happen. It is a wonder to me!

No, you are right. It does not work for me. Maybe there's something in the Chapman book I missed.

1970 Sunfish Repair - Needing help to bringing order to the chaos!

So GreenBoatStuff FINALLY shipped my 8" bronze carriage bolt. Now we can go sailing? No, Signal Charlie got us out of that jam months ago. So my review on GreenBoatStuff is they do what they say, but it could take a very long time. Ordered 12-18-2020 Delivered 4-28-2021 Customer service...

1970 Sunfish Repair - Needing help to bringing order to the chaos!

Well, I hope it has been worth all the views. I have totally enjoyed the experience. I do plan to wrap this up soon. I've got just a couple more issues. Right now I'll review my new SLO Sail and Canvas spar bag for posterity. I provided this review to them directly a couple weeks ago and...

1970 Sunfish Repair - Needing help to bringing order to the chaos!

While we were in Florida, we were given a copy of this. It has been a good read so far. Just the term "seamanship" makes me feel like I need to be more responsible when sailing, like I'm representing a class of sportsman that depend on me to hold up a standard. Wouldn't it be nice if...

1970 Sunfish Repair - Needing help to bringing order to the chaos!

I really like the seat binder idea a lot, but I won't modify this classic piece of bronze to that extent. I might do it if I obtained a second one from a scrap project. Of course I hate the straight slotted bronze screw too, but I hate the idea of buggering it up with an undersized screw...

1970 Sunfish Repair - Needing help to bringing order to the chaos!

So we had our big sailing adventure in FL - about 5 days of effort. The first day there wasn't enough wind and what breeze we had blew right in the mouth of the long bayou channel. Then 3 days days of ideal winds. We sailed for miles. All the crew has been initiated and two have taken the...
