Can you teach a beginner to sail in 20+ knot winds?

On the other hand, trying to teach someone on a light or flukey day can be very frustrating to them, rather than just getting them set up on a course and having them hold it and get a feel for the boat, and have fun.

Can you teach a beginner to sail in 20+ knot winds?

I usually wait until August and September to sail my Laser on my local lakes, even then there is only occasionally a day with >10 knots and I only got out a few times this year. Maybe i'll invest in a wet suit. Anyone here ever try a smaller sail on a Sunfish? (I have some if the rig from...

    Rattling Laser!

Where did you end up cutting the inspection port? Trying to decide myself. No specific hull repair needed, just making sure it's dried out and any bad buoyancy foam can be removed and replaced if neccesary. (Also have a slight rattle but seems to be more in the stern?)

Can you teach a beginner to sail in 20+ knot winds?

Anyone else sailing inland/lakes (in the north) usually wait until this time of year to get out with heavier winds? If you haven't seen this guy's channel he has a bunch about sailing lakes in Wisconsin (I think) including multi day camping on his sunfish, has his own techniques for stowing...

    NH Laser Sailors

I'm in NH but don't fit any of your other criteria. Just googled "yacht club portsmouth nh laser" and found some of the yacht clubs etc. around there but don't know any details. (If any other fellow lake sailors farther west in NH or western MA is reading this and want to get in touch...

40 years old and overweight (the boat that is!)

Hello everyone. Finally had time to work on this. I tried just blowing air through the drain plug. (Though warm dry days have been few and far between where I live, tons of rain.) (I got a little 12V blower for inflating air beds and beach toys and stuff, connected to a battery with a big...

40 years old and overweight (the boat that is!)

Thanks for all the advice. I guess I'll just try it for a few weeks and see how it goes, the only way to know if it's working is to keep weiging it? And the only way to know if it's the deck glass or foam that's holding water would be to open it up, I guess?

Thanks. I've seen the warnings about air compressors, thanks for the warning about even low pressure! I'm still wondering if there will be enough air flow with a small blower (no sealed pressure) through the drain hole only, plus screw holes from removed deck fittings , to dry out any...

40 years old and overweight (the boat that is!)

I'm talking about my boat of course -- but also myself too if I'm being honest. I think this boat was maybe built the same year and month as my birth (June 1980) but not sure. Hull seems to be in good shape, but it is quite a bit overweight. I don't think I got a very accurate weight...

How to signal LACK of distress?

There are a few sailors that like to come out to our local lake when the wind's particularly strong and being a not-large lake that usually means contending with lots of gusts and shifts etc and a capsize is not uncommon but we always look out for each other and swing by to make sure that...

Anyone know what this boat is?

Thanks! I think I had searched for "Skate" but only found the bigger Australian boat. "Lincoln Skate" pulls up a few pages with info. I'll see if anyone has ever sold a sail on eBay but maybe this is a good opportunity to learn how to use the sewing machine! Could cut down an old worn...

Anyone know what this boat is?

I'm trying to identify this little boat, a kind of small Sailfish knockoff, about 10' loa, 3' beam, mast far forward and a bit of a cockpit molded in the top. See photos. Does anyone recognize this or know of a similar boat? A neighbor wanted to get rid of it so I added it to my pile of boats...
