    Install bailer on Vanguard 420

That pump looks great, if I had seen that, I would have tried that first.

    Install bailer on Vanguard 420

Thanks all, I installed the bailer, was not difficult at all (used a multi-tool for the cut), and it works well when sailing. That said, I found it much easier to buy a Ryobi power inverter and plug it into a cheap 120v bailer for a portable pump (the 420 is docked on the lake), than to take...

Storing in water at small lake

I like this idea, considering for 420, but wouldn't this scrape the boat as it slides on and off the PVC?

Storing in water at small lake

I have put the laser and the pico on the dock and checked for water about every other month. The Pico does retain water (a lot!), but so far the laser has not had any water. YMMV.

Storing in water at small lake

P-1000, here is my setup in a Miami lake (Pico, 420, and Laser). I leave all 3 boats in the water all the time, and it works fine for me for the laser and the Pico (the 420 doesn't have a way of draining rainwater, so I am looking for another solution, such as a bailer or a cover). The tradeoffs...

Storing in water at small lake

The difficulty is getting the straps under the boat while it is floating. It is doable, but after the third or fourth time, I stopped putting it on. To be fair, the cover was not meant for the boat (it was a cheaper generic cover), so it is possible a cover meant for the boat would be easier...

Storing in water at small lake

I am in a similar situation, I keep my Laser, Pico, and 420 moored to the dock in our small lake. My biggest issue is that I find it very difficult to put the cover on correctly when it is in the water, so I end up leaving the cover off. Also, invest in at least 2 fenders/bumpers (mine are...

    Install bailer on Vanguard 420

Thanks LaLi. I was thinking about the cover, but I figure if I have a bailer open, shouldn't that be enough to drain the water when the boat is on the dolly? Seems like more $ and effort when the bailer open would do the trick? Or does the bailer only work if the boat is in the water and...

    Install bailer on Vanguard 420

Hello, I recently purchased an older Vanguard 420, without a bailer. I have been pumping out rainwater (and water that gets in from the centerboard) using a drill pump, but that gets old really fast. Has anyone successfully installed a Andersen/Elvstrom Automatic Bailer (Medium) on a Vanguard...

    Is this Capri 14.2 Mast?

Thanks Jarrett! It does look different, but to be sure, would it be possible to measure the length of the mast? Online I could only find measurements from the waterline to the top of the mast. Thanks! Ryan

    Is this Capri 14.2 Mast?

Hello, I bought a 420 sailboat on Craiglist today, I checked the boat but did not think to check the mast. When trying to step the mast, I noticed that it didn't seem to work, and a measurement confirmed it is too long (21 feet, 4 inches vs 20 feet 6 inches). Some simple googling led be to...

    Hurt back raising mast

Thanks Eddie and LaLi, they are wooden folis, so I will bring these in. Likewise with the ropes. I will leave the sail on the mast until my back is 100% better, and then always have a helper when I raise/lower the mast. I guess this is a benefit of the Sunfish, the mast raising seems much easier.

    Hurt back raising mast

Thanks, my back is worth more than that. Just curious, any downside to leaving the daggerboard and the rudder (both in the 'up' position) in the boat? I assume the sheets dont degrade with sun?

    Hurt back raising mast

I bought my first sailboat in May (a Pico, now added a Laser Radial), and have raised and lowered the mast each time I sailed, about 25 times. On Friday, as I was raising the mast on the laser, I hurt my back. I ended up rolling the sail around the raised mast, and tying with the cunningham as...

    Boats fitting under bridges

I am also a newbie, just started mid-May, so take this with a grain of salt. I dont know of any beginner saiboats which allow the mast to be lowered while sailing (some allow you to lower the sail, but the mast will remain upright). What is the clearance under the bridge? For your bonus...

    Pico sails worn out?

I weigh about 180 pounds (80 kg). I found a cheap Laser Radial on Craigslist, will try it out later this week and if I like it, have my son on the Pico. Thanks All!

    Pico sails worn out?

Thanks Riv! Does the Mylar sail provide a noticeable amount of whizz? If so, I will probably go this route.

    Pico sails worn out?

I bought a used Laser Pico a month ago, and now that I have some experience sailing it ~ 10 times in our neighborhood lake, I would like more speed. I attached some pictures of the mainsail, I think the previous owner said the boat is about 20 years old, do the sails look like they should be...
