    Help with tiller extension bolt

Thanks, I was thinking about that last night. Because it is recessed the chances of the Dremel coming in contact with the tiller extension handle and damaging the wood are high. If the head of the bolt were raised it would be a no brainer.

    Help with tiller extension bolt

I’m pretty sure it is original as my parents were the original owners and it was not used very often. The plastic washers you mentioned are all there. The nut is very unusual as it has notches all the way around and the end of the bolt has a small hole in it parallel to the head and there is a...

    Help with tiller extension bolt

Glad to know it’s not just me then. It is not broken, so maybe I would be better off to leave it as is, carefully varnishing around it. If it breaks in the future then I can deal with it then. I’ll wait to see if anyone else replies with other ideas. Thanks for your reply!

    Sunfish hull repair

I had to repair similar cracks in the gel coat near the dagger board slot on my ‘79. I found that using a Dremel tool with a round metal bit to grind out the cracks was helpful. I was careful just to grind through the gel coat and then I used MarineTex to fill the area. Once hardened, sand flat...

    Help with tiller extension bolt

I have taken some time off from restoring my ‘79 Sunfish, but I’m determined to get her in the water in June. Much of the work was cosmetic and/or replacing some old parts. I also had to repair the mast step and a few other things, but this forum was invaluable in helping me do it right. Last...

Very cool restoration. Bet there are not too many of them around.

New to forums, a few questions...

Nola Mike if money isn’t a concern you can order a new set of spars from Annapolis Performance Sailing and take a road trip up there to pick them up. I am thinking about ordering a new mast and spars from them ($500). Upper and lower booms only is $325. Takes about 2 weeks to get them once you...

    1979 Sunfish restoration

Norcalsail...the boat was stored upside down under a deck and there was a small set of wheels attached to the gudgeon bracket that allowed it to be rolled in and out over plywood that was laying on top of the sand. Over time the plywood deteriorated and the bow was laying in direct contact with...

    1979 Sunfish restoration

I am having fun doing it, but once I am done I will be sailing it! I figure after 30 years of neglect spending some time bringing it back to life can’t hurt before putting it back into service.

    1979 Sunfish restoration

Today I was able to get around to polishing the deck. I used a three step process with Meguiar’s RV and Marine #49 Oxidation Remover, then #45 High Gloss polish, followed by one coat of their #56 Pure Wax. Next weekend I will install a new swivel cleat and a new bailer assembly. Here are some pics:

Mast Step Chips - how to fix

I just made the exact same repair to my Sunfish. I think this condition can come from sitting over time as well. My Sunfish was used infrequently for the first several years and then sat unused for probably 30 years. Scroll down in my thread and you will see my repair: 1979 Sunfish restoration

    SeaDek

Obviously they added it for a reason. Restoring this boat is as much just a fun project as it is just to have a boat to go sailing every now and again. I thought the SeaDek might be a cool upgrade.

    SeaDek

I don’t think I need to go quite that far...yet!:) I think the SeaDek will look pretty cool in addition to adding some traction. I’ll post picks once I get it installed.

    SeaDek

It had grip tape on it many years ago, but not any longer. While I am looking forward to sailing it, chances are I will be sailing it 4 or 5 times a summer, so it isn’t going to get a lot of wear. I have SeaDek on the lid of a Yeti cooler and it has held up well. I highly doubt it will discolor...

    1979 Sunfish restoration

Thanks! It was a good bit of work, but the end result is quite nice. It is smooth as a baby’s bottom now. I will tackle the top of the hull next. I am going to try compounding it first, rather than sanding it, unless absolutely necessary. The top is in much better condition. I just may get this...

    SeaDek

I am curious to hear from anyone that has ever installed Sea Dek on their Sunfish around the cockpit to keep from sliding in strong winds/rough seas? Several years ago SeaDek templated a kit that basically covers the entire top of a Sunfish. I looked at using some of the pieces they designed...

    1979 Sunfish restoration

Update: Earlier in this thread I posted several pics of the bottom of the hull which had been laying upside down under my parent’s beach house deck for 30 plus years. During that time the wooden deck above had been stained and the boat was not covered. Consequently there was stain all over the...

    Saw some Sunfish today...

I was out for a cruise in my power boat today and came across some Sunfish racing in a regatta at the Rappahannock River Yacht Club on Carter’s Creek in Irvington, VA. Nice to see them out on the water. Thought y’all might like to see them too.
