    Downwind technique 20kt

One of the things that works well for me in conditions that prevent "aggressive" downwind sailing is to cleat the main at around 80-85 degrees, board up about 8-10", and sail the boat by the lee by pressure felt. I'll usually have my back hand near the tiller extention swivel and my forward hand...

    ocean sailing in a laser?

Hi, Devich. He's not really in the "bluewater" yet. He's sailing off the beach of Alamitos Bay, but is still well inside the protecting breakwater. The waves are wind chop and traffic wake, but as we all know, the Laser will surf on just about anything bigger than a ripple.

    ocean sailing in a laser?

Good job, John. I agree with GBR 134, concentrate more on actually sailing the boat, just like you did in the harbor. Don't worry about the waves (just windchop for those unfamiliar with the conditions), and remember, don't stay so close to shore that shore becomes a problem. Like GBR says, get...

    ocean sailing in a laser?

Well, let's think worst case scenario, and you needed someone to go look for you. It gets dark around 7:30. If you told your someone that you would be back at 7, by the time they went out looking for you it would be dark. Until you are completely comfortable, plan to be back in a few hours...

    ocean sailing in a laser?

These sailors are all participating in a racing clinic. The support boats are mainly there as coaching, but yes, they would be there for safety assistance as well. You don't need a chase boat to go out in the bay for normal sailing. On a normal day, any one of those 40+ sailors would go out in...

    ocean sailing in a laser?

JPL62, It is best to go out with another boat, especially the first few (bunch) times. However, Alamitos Bay is a very forgiving area in that if you do get into any trouble, the wind will push you ashore. I sail that area too, and we go out of the harbor every time we want to sail. Sailing in...

    4.7s at Mids West

Iv'e been trying to push ABYC to consider the 4.7. Problem is the Sabots have their roots dug deep around here. The kids that are big enough for the 4.7 are willing to do it, but no one wants to be the first. They are happy enough entering the huge fleets of sabots rather than the 4 or so 4.7's...

    Pink Boat For Merrily!

I'll be sending entries for my son and I. I'ts a bit too far away on the calendar for me to commit to the trip, but getting the entry in is the first step. I'll do my best to be there.

Ideas for Improving the Top section

I don't know a Laser sailor that has not broken at least one top section. If you are serious about your racing, you (a general "you", not a specific one) too either have already broken one, or you will. When you do break one, that would be the time to buy the proposed "better" one. Or, buy the...

Ideas for Improving the Top section

Certainly better than the alternative; your top section breaks because of a rivet hole... you lose the top section AND your sail! If adhesive slipped, you'll lose some sail trim. I'll take the latter.

Ideas for Improving the Top section

Hi, guys. Here is what I'm using; It's Scotch-Weld 2216/AB. Aircraft Spruce stocks it, but I have a quart here in Long Beach,CA if anyone wants to try it. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/3mAdhesive2216.php

Ideas for Improving the Top section

I'm glad at least one other skipper read it the way I did. I didn't get a chance to look up the adhesive today at work, will get it tomorrow. As for end for ending, it can still be done, but you'll probably have to cut off the sleeve. Hopefully without the weak spot, end for ending won't be...

Ideas for Improving the Top section

Clive, I'll have to look at the can tomorrow at work. It is an aviation adhesive, specifically designed to glue either plastic or aluminum to aluminum. Pretty sure it's a PPG product, a 2 part contact cement. I'll post it tomorrow. Ross, yes it's simply glued on, no rivet.

Ideas for Improving the Top section

I suppose any rule is subject to interpretation. 26 (c) allows for alternative fastening methods as a means of preventive maintenance. My boat won't go any faster with glue instead of a rivet. All I'm doing is saving my equipment from premature failure.

    Laser Masters updates from Spain

They split the fleet due to the amount of boats, and will go to Silver and Gold fleets tomorrow. A better description is within the NOR.
