Hello-- thanks all for their comments and help! I did have a few pretty quick follow-up questions, but I won't have time to post/reply with those until tomorrow. Just wanted to give a quick thanks now. I think this goes out to all who replied...?
Hello--I purchased a cam cleat/cam base (photo included) to install on my new-to-me Sunfish. (It's not the Harken Carbo Ratchet Single Block w/pulley like some forum members have). My dad installed the cam base on the Sunfish I sailed as a kid, and since it helped a ton, I figured I'd just go...
I very recently cut out an inspection port hole on the interior of my Sunfish's cockpit area. Although I was more than a little nervous beforehand, it worked out just fine with a rotozip saw. I did have somewhat of a hard time creating a depression or dimple for the saw to initially catch to...
Hello all--
It's my first time repairing my new old Sunfish (actually my first time repairing any boat), and I have a few chipped areas I need to fill in. As the two attachd photos show, they are pretty small, and not at all deep (max of 1/8 inch deep). The largest is 2.5 in. by 1 inch, while...
Hello-- thanks for the tip... As far the laminate goes, is that something that tends to shred or tear during drilling? I have a center-hole punch, so I figured I would use that to create a small recess to allow for cleaner drilling from the start. Thanks again,
Peter
Hello all-- I have an older model Sunfish to which I'd like to add a transom drain plug (a previous Sunfish I used to sail had one, and I grew to appreciate it).
I have a plug and a drill, and it seems like a very simple add-on. Should I be concerned though about drilling into a support...
Thanks! For now I'll stick with one six-inch port in the front cockpit wall (bulkhead). You mentioned positioning the fan so that it's blowing rearward. Wouldn't I want to blow outside air forward into the boat to dry it out? Or would it be better to blow the heated air (by way of a light bulb)...
Hello-- glad to hear your Sunfish is drying out! I have an older boat which I'm hoping to dry out as well. I'd like to install two ports, one 5 inch port behind the splash guard (or on the front-most wall of the the cockpit), and another 4 inch one in the aft end of the boat. Any suggestions...
Thanks everyone for your input! Wonder how much precaution I'll need to take while cutting holes for inspection ports (definitely one, possibly two). Seems like this would unleash much less fiberglass dust than sanding.
Hello all--
I recently purchased an older Sunfish that requires some fiberglass patching (I'm also planning on installing a couple of inspection ports).
This will be my first time doing fiberglass repair, and I'm well aware that I need to wear a respirator mask. Just not sure yet what kind...
