What has to be done ?

When you tack with the main only do you continue the turn until the main fills and then center the tiller? I have had people tell me to pick a spot on shore 90 de. to my present course and turn until I was headed there I sailed with a fellow in Mission Viejo and he said the boat might be...

Sounds like you have it under control

What has to be done ?

Budman, Do you have the jib sheets brought back to the center of the boat for easier access through fairleads and then cleat them back where you're at ?

A different kind of tiller tamer

Russ, could you explain a little why and when you would need to use this tamer. Maybe I'm missing something in my sailing.

What has to be done ?

Budman, Thank you for the reply. If the boat is not designed as a cat boat, is tacking difficult with no jib to pull you around and the mast further to the center of the boat ? If you are sailing with both sails do you limit the tiller movement somehow if you need to deal with a sail problem ?

What has to be done ?

Was looking for something to sail alone. I thought the Capri Expo 14.2 would be perfect, liked the furling mainsail, but the new price is giving me heart burn. So, I might have to get a used Capri 14.2, sloop rigged and then make it as single-handed as I can. Has anyone worked a...

    My Motor Mount

With your motor on the starboard side did you put the battery on the port side ? Thinking about the weight balance.

    Sailing angle to the wind

Went out last night in a Lightning, wind was very light. We set the jib, cleated it and then worked on sailing as close as possible to the wind and then falling off if we went to far. And I have to say I got a little too close a few times. We were spread out in the boat so the boat stayed...

    Sailing angle to the wind

I have read your additional writing a few times now and feel I understand what you were getting at. When I think I have things as good as they can be loosen my grip on the tiller and feel what it wants to do. If it wants to change course start looking at the trim again. Thanks for the new...

    Sailing angle to the wind

fnhuber, If the main isn't starting to luff and the jib telltales aren't fluttering, I would think my sails were in trim. Would they not be balanced also? If this is not the case could you expand on this " balanced sail " idea a little bit for me ?

    Expo charges ahead

Just heard some of what I thought was very surprising info yesterday. I was talking to a Capri dealer and was asking about looking at the 2 models of the 14.2. I was told they didn't carry the Bermuda rigged boat anymore. This was due to the high number of Expo's they were selling. They said...

    Sailing angle to the wind

Boat, Could you go into this "balanced sails" vs. "trimmed sails" a little more ? I don't understand how sails could not be balanced if they are trimmed. Also which one is done first ? Thanks

    Sailing angle to the wind

Thank you for the reply. I have had an occasion when the tiller had a lot or resistance on it. Had no idea that something was wrong. Sometime I will have to try the letting go of the tiller see if the boat just keeps on course. On trimming the main, I understand that the telltales should just...

    Sailing angle to the wind

All things being equal and speaking theoretically could you answer a couple of questions for me ? A. The true wind is coming out of the North 0 deg. and I am on a port tack with my boat 45 deg. off the wind and my sails are set at 45 deg. to starboard from the center line of the boat. I think...

    tacking trouble

Am having trouble with tacking . I understand what is happening. I know the steps required to make it work. The problem I'm having is moving my fanny to the other side and not dropping the sheet or having the tiller extension getting in the way. This move looks so easy but I just get tangled...

    Family daysailer vs 2nd Sunfish

For a quick rigging daysailer you might look at the Catalina Expo 14. It's a dry sailer and the single sail and non-stayed mast go up with ease.
