    Storing foils

Can I safely store my foils standing up, or leaning against a wall in a foilbag? I have a set of GRP foils and an old foam centerboard. I understand the latter should preferably be stored flat. Best, Duncan

    difficulty in spotting approaching gusts

I have difficulty in seeing gusts approach and anticipating on them. I just see waves... What are the telltale signs? Dark spots? For instance in this video: Can you tell me how the sailor can see a gust is approaching the boat? Best, Duncan

Harken stand up boot:use and installation

I bought a Harken 369 stand up boot to replace the stand up spring for the main sheet block. Installing it seems very challenging. I found a video from APS, but this boot is very small indeed (although the recommended size by Harken. Anyone experience in using a boot instead of a spring, and...

    Harken spring cup?

A couple of days ago I noticed that Harken used to make a 'spring cup' : a plastic washer with an edge that helps to seat the spring to keep the mainsheet ratchet block upright. Now it is apparently discontinued. Did anyone of you use such a spring cup? Best, Duncan

how critical are screw sizes (length)

I was looking at replacing some of the hardware and simultaneously replacing the mounting hardware. I have downloaded the official Laser parts diagrams. Now all screw sizes are imperial, and I have to find the nearest metric size. Apparantly size 10 is 4.8mm. But 5/8" = 16mm is not a normal...

silly question: wax on deck and cockpit area?

Maybe a silly question, but do you put wax on the deck and the cockpit area, or will this make these too slippery? Best, Duncan

    Drysuit considerations

I have been looking at and trying on drysuits for a while now. The fact that I have very slender wrists limits the choice somewhat. The Gul and Gill with neoprene sleeves are barely up against my skin so it is hard to believe these will not leak. Another brand from Germany uses latex sleeves on...

    tell tales and camber stripes

In the Laser main there are tell tales behind the luff. To the best of my understanding tell tales are only used in these position on fore sails like genuas and jibs, because the mast causes eddies and vortices that disturbe the flow too much and mains generally are fitted with tell tales on the...

Difficulty bearing off in 15 knots and depowering on a reach

Yesterday I went sailing in 15+ knots and serious waves for an inland lake and because I have mainly sailed in winds up to 15 knots, I still find this very challenging. Upwind is fine, but I have difficulty changing course to a broad reach, while keeping the boat under control. I earlier...

Cockpit sticker (next to centerboard slot)

Does anybody know where to get a replacement 'Laser' sticker that is normally on the port side of the centerboard slot? Bow sticker is readily available, but this one is not, according to the dealer. I found this online, but there is no contact info. Laser Sailboat Replacement Decal [Black] |...

'Fat' eyelet in Rooster radial replacement sail

The eyelet in the clew of my Rooster replacement radial sail is much thicker than the eye in the Rooster replacement standard sail or the official standard sail of my boat. That means neither the hook of the Harken clew sleeve, nor the hook of the Ronstan 'outhaul block with hook' seat properly...

    Newbie question on rigging/launching

There are many rigging videos on YouTube but these show the complete process. In the situation of for example onshore wind do I understand correctly you rig everything but the main sheet before launching and fit the sheet from within the boat? I was taught in sailing school to fit the boom...

    identify replica/original daggerboard and rudderblade

I was wondering if it is possible to identify 'real' from replica rudderblades and centerboards. I have a late glass fibre centerboard and it has 'Laser' embossed in the surface. The rudder blade just has a sticker. Apart from stickers, is there a way to check if rudderblades and centerboards...

advice on boat choice: new vs recent

I was wondering if it makes more sense to buy a new boat as opposed to a 'recent' boat. Were I live (The Netherlands) very few recent boats are on offer and these are quite expensive. From a depreciation point of view, would it not make more sense to buy a new one?

    Carbon tiller with 'roller'

Today I looked at a Laser I am likely to purchase (hopefully). It has a carbon tiller, which is flat like the Rooster, but has a roller built in. Its like a 'single roller' bearing to let the traveller pass. Made in the UK. Familiar to anyone?

Dolly/Trolley: fixed or demountable aluminum or plated steel

I am considering buying a dolly/trolley and am unsure to choose a fixed one or a demountable one. If it can be taken apart that seems to be advantageous when it has to be stored or transported for some reason (in the back of the car as opposed to on a truck or trailer) , but I imagine a fixed...

dolly with bow support vs 'nose' support

Hello all. I would like to introduce myself: I am Duncan, 42 years old and started Laser sailing this summer in a course on one of Hollands beautiful lakes. Now I am collecting information on which boat to buy for next season. My question regards dollies/trolleys: Some types have a metal...
