I've decided at least for now to put in a large inspection plate on the fwd facing bulkhead. I'll have that + the topside inspection port to give access. And plan on wearing gloves and a long sleeve shirt and at that will probably be bloody after!
I have an older Sunfish, which unfortunately has a very leaky daggerboard trunk. So much so that I am usually dunked by the middle of a sail. Its time to bite the bullet and effect a permanent and lasting repair. I already have an inspection plate in the topsides, and was able to get my hand...
This brings back memories when I towed my sunfish with a 1980s Fiat. Those where the days when you only worried about who was going to bring the Reunite on ice .... So nice.
Being scared of capsizing is not a bad thing. It only makes you a better sailor. Racing the sunfish can take your mind off things that are scary too. That's what helped me when I started racing beach catamaran's.... Took my mind off of pitch-polling...
But I never got on a small sail boat...
I would suggest reading Maiden voyage ... It's about an 18 year old, Tanie Abie who had no sailing experience and sailed around the world in a brand new 26 foot sloop. Interesting reading.
