Hello there laser-liking type people. Long time no post. I have progressed from complete fool to vaguely competent over this year. I am now coming mid field and hardly ever crashing into the commodore.
My question. In around 20 knots, I really struggle to windward which I feel terrible about...
Future Laser Olympics champion shares his latest race report.
The two-edged sword. Being a bumbling fool on the water, crashing into competitors, almost sinking the boat, upsetting the commodore and generally stuffing up has a positive. It means writing race reports is midly interesting...
Sailed on Monday, for the second time in a row with breeze 20 Kts plus.
I am 6 ft 1 and about 95 Kgs so I have plenty of weight, but...
In over 20 knots and beating, I am constantly struggling to keep the boat sailing well and upright
Should I be able to handle this
We'll, thank you all for your advice regarding how to sail in 25knots +. I diligently read all of your wise advice and then promptly forgot everything in the race. In hindsight, I should have excepted Jimmy's advice - ie stay on shore in the bar.
Anyway, I knew things were not going to go too...
I thought it might be good to get everyone's top 2 tips to sailing fast.
I'll kick off
(1) Put the bung in the back of the transom. I found that leaving this out means the boat fills with water and your performance is effected.
(2) When rigging the outhaul, don't try and do a bowline...
Has anyone used this - is it any good?
Also - Is there any downside to buying a compass? By this I mean, will this hinder my progress by relying on equipment rather than feel etc?
Hello people (or should that be peeps),
Here is my question
If a course is set directly downwind between two marks, should I sail directly downwind or is it always better to sail on an angle (as opposed to a dead run) and then gybe back?
Psychologists have a nice way of categorising the learning of a new skill. They break the learning process into 4 stages. I can relate to these stages.
Stage 1. Unconscious Incompetence. ie You don't know how bad you are. When I proclaimed I was on the way to the Olympics, I was at stage 1. I...
OK....My first 2 months in the Laser have been interesting to say the least. I have now moved from blissful ignorance to overwhelmed awareness. The more you know the more aware of how little you know!
Our club raced on the bay on the weekend (away from the security of the lake). I now know...
I know most of you will have some experience in Laser sailing and probably adjust your cunningham, outhaul & Vang for each leg. At this stage of my learning I follow a different strategy. It's called "set and forget". After Saturday I will be revising this "strategy".
When I arrived to set up...
Hello,
Thank you all for being so kind to a beginner. Below is the Race report for race 3.
Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink
I sail to start line in plenty of time (I thought). As I’m trying to get to the line, the wind completely stops. 1 minute to the start and I’m...
Hello all
Thank you for your kind responses to Race 1. Please find Race 2 report below:
Race 2 and my day of redemption is at hand. My minor incident last week (apparently known around the club as “the sinking boat episode”) would surely be forgotten, once I blast these pretenders off the...
Hello all.
I have just bought a Laser and joined a local club. I thought you might like to follow my progress from novice to Olympic sailor. Cheers!
My first race looms, but first have to help my Dad move houses. The dutiful son, helps with the move, all the time keeping an eye on the...
