Since Vanguard is no more, there is no difference in cloth types. the only difference is north folds the sail poorly (over the window and occasionally a batten pocket). hyde folds them with longer creases and more carefully.
I just take a piece of bungie and tie it to the bow eye. only one piece, not the "standard" piece that uses the loop around the mast. but i run it through a mast tie down and inbetween the outhaul and cunningham lines so that it doesnt put any pressure on them while going down wind. also...

The pin doesnt matter, as long as you have the downhaul. If you really really want the pin though, bend it at the end so the mainsheet doesnt get caught. Even if you think the mainsheet won't get hooked on it. It happens at the worst times.
