Dear Charleston's James Island Yacht Club, Come on.. It's time for some changes..

Nate, I'm a member at JIYC and I'd love to know what kind of response you get from the club. My guess is that they will do absolutely nothing. The club is run by a group of people that have no interest in sailing. They don't like being criticized or told what to do, especially by a nonmember...

    Laser Simulator available at Tacticat

Re: Tacticat I am an admin on Tacticat, and I think you should give Tacticat another shot. Tacticat suffers from the occasional bad apple, just as all other internet communities do. We have some members who use profane language and attempt to exploit rules from time to time. These people...

    Ugly wrinkles are fast (downwind?)

Cunningham should be completely off. Outhaul should not be completely blown off though. Remember, sailing by the lee is all about flow across the sail. If you do not have a proper shape you will lose flow and will not go fast.

Laser run over by tour boat

We have had problems with this exact tour boat in Charleston for years. It was only a matter of time before this happened. Glad the guy was ok.

is my tiller extension too long?

48 inches seems to be the standard today. Some guys go a bit longer but I wouldn't do it. If your extension is 48inches or shorter you should be just fine with a bit of practice.

are roll tacks really worth it?

Hell yes roll tacking is worth it. Rolling the boat through a tack does not make you gain speed, it helps you sustain the speed you had prior to a tack. Slamming the tiller hard over to tack acts as a brake and will slow you down every time.

Lowest weight someone can get away with?

I'm pretty sure Ben Ainslie was only at 155 in the 1996 games. You can get away with being underweight but you have to be damn good.

    upwind, light sailor

First of all, don't call me boy again. Secondly, I know its called vang sheeting but I felt that describing the technique would do more to help briscoe. Yes, exactly. The point I was making was that you sail be boat based on heal, not on what the sail looks like. This is a huge mistake that...

    upwind, light sailor

Seriously, I am underweight but have learned how to hang over the years. First of all you absolutely need to be hiking harder than everyone else if you want to have any shot at all in bigger breeze. Another thing that helps is to crank the vang on so that as you ease the sheet the boom goes...

[D12] 2nd Championship Event in Savannah

No, you don't need to pre-register. Sleeping in a car is probably the best bet if you want to be very close. I am pretty sure there are 2 or 3 showers on site. I stayed with Eric Oetgen last year and may try to stay with him again this year so I have no idea about hotels in the area.

Breaking of Carbon Fiber hiking stick?

Its sailing, stuff breaks. I have gone through a few Acme extensions in the past few years. I have had one break within a month of purchase and I have one that has lasted about 8 years. Stuff happens and things break. No big deal.

What is the secret of downwind boat speed

Windward heel is only important if you are going in a straight line in flat water. If there are any waves at all you need to be rolling the boat around and carving a lot. There are a few things that set the really fast guys apart from the rest. Steering the boat with your body weight...

    Atlanta Olympics boat question

The boats used in the olympics are red. The other boats made that year were blue and had the design on the side but were not used in the olympics.
