how to tell the age of a boat?????

I'm restoring #387 which I was able to rescue from the "Green Mile" scrap heap at our clubs yard. She has a crack thru the traveler clam cleat area, other than that nothing major. With the help of my fellow Laserites I found the hull # under the bow eye. She was built in June 1971

    upper>lower mast rigging

Is there a trick to sliding the upper/lower mast pieces together? The smaller piece on the connector goes in fine, then it stops. I don't want damage it. Am I missing something? It's my first time assembling this type of mast. Thanks.
