    Laser or Nacra - Help!

You realize this thread is from 2008....my guess is the OP made a decision by now!

    So how crazy are we?

I have friends who made multiple trips to Catalina on beachcats from MDR, Cabrillo. I never got around to doing that on my Prindle 18 but have made crossings on larger boats. Being at UCLA when Sorosz was there (hey, boss), I remember all of those discussions about our making the trip as...

pre-rigging for launch - how to prepare for dock type launch?

Ah...that youtube video is crazy. I couldn't lift that entire rig like that each time, especially with the wind blowing. Hard enough just to pop the mast in with the sail streaming.

pre-rigging for launch - how to prepare for dock type launch?

I don't have the sleeve, but rather just a strap. Truthfully, since I just go out and sail around for fun and never race, I don't bother with it....just more stuff to have to mess with!

pre-rigging for launch - how to prepare for dock type launch?

With a decent breeze blowing, what I do is wait for a bit of a lull before attaching the hook. I just let the boat center itself and then at the right moment, snap on and tighten the line.

pre-rigging for launch - how to prepare for dock type launch?

Hey Deeman...everyone has been there.... How could the boat move so much if it's tied off to the dock? At our launch, the wind does the same as yours, coming across, so when tied up, the boat flags out. It will move but mostly just point into the wind. I do use a hook for the outhaul for quick...

pre-rigging for launch - how to prepare for dock type launch?

For me.....about the only thing I pre-rig is the main sheet running through the boom. (actually I leave it there all the time.) I launch the boat sans sail and gear. For one thing, the boat sits on the trailer higher than on the water so getting the mast seated is actually tougher. I assemble...

Laser sailing in LA / SM area. Review of YC and UCLA MAC

Maybe a bit more.....I think the clubs in the Marina are pretty expensive but have racks. CYC used to do mid-week races. MDR has mast up storage at the ramps for roughly $100 per month. I sail mostly out of Ventura Harbor. There is a very active Laser fleet there racing on Fridays. Way too...

Laser sailing in LA / SM area. Review of YC and UCLA MAC

I was an instructor at UCLA for over 6 years and also USSA certified. It's been about 8 years since I was there so whatever I say could be long done..maybe Steve S., who is on this forum and was our fearless leader at the time, can add a bit. You needed to demonstrate proficiency in the boats...

    Rigging tricks from a pier...

I launch from a dock that sits crosswise to the wind and have the same issues! Ever tried dropping a fully loaded mast and sail with the wind behind you? Yow..Note that I can't wade in the water and have to rig while in the boat. I do the same things...have the rudder and centerboard already...

    Spring clothing question

As I recall, when you put us through our US Sailing Instructor course, you made us swim in the marina without any wetsuit, float for 5 minutes and tie knots while in the water...all in late December weather! Sheldon

    CA DMV registration stickers

Yeah, you are supposed to have them on. If you sail Marina Del Rey, you stand a good chance of being pulled over. In Ventura Harbor, where I sail, everyone has their numbers on.

    Carrying Radio-which model?

What kind of PFD are you using that has a pocket? Does the radio fully fit in there? Does it get in the way when you are sailing?

    Carrying Radio-which model?

I've been looking at the Standard Horizon HX751, which seems to be about the same size as the ICom but a bit less expensive. My PFD doesn't have pockets though so I'd have to attach it to the strap. It's not something I would carry for inside the marina days but I do mostly go out to the...

    Carrying Radio-which model?

I'm considering carrying a marine radio with me and wondering if anyone has a favorite? ICom makes some good waterproof/floating ones as well as Standard Horizon. Ideally, I'd like something smallish that won't be a pain to attach to my PFD. Thanks...

    Stupid, stupid, stupid

Decided to sail today for the first time in a number of months; just been busy cycling and doing other things. Headed up to our local launch ramp for an ocean cruise. Skies were cloudy under fog. It's been strange in Socal this year. Just 1 mile inland it was hot and sunny but alas, we had...

    Sailing Gear Suggestions

For Socal; in summer, I generally wear either a shortie/Spring wetsuit or even a pair of board shorts along with booties to protect my feet. Rarely a spray top of some sort. I have an Aquafleece top that might be a touch warmish on sunny days but on the foggy ones, be cozy. Not sure yet as I...

    Trailer Vibration

Wish I had a good answer for you. My Trailex does that, right at 50 mph. But stops at 55 and settles down. Very strange....

    Show off YOUR Laser!

I used to run a mainsheet cleat like that years ago with my first Laser. Helped to take a lot of pressure off the hands. The downside to it was when fully hiked out, I couldn't always maintain a good angle on the line, would get hit with a gust of wind and swimming, swimming....... I don't run...

    spray top

I've been using a Rooster Aquafleece as a spraytop. Keeps the water off and is nice and toasty.
