Class Politics Welcome to the ILCA Dinghy class!

So if the boat is the "ILCA Dinghy" will the class be called the "International ILCA Dinghy Class Association?"

    Class Politics Olympic status

Since you asked... Yes, I did buy an RS Aero a few years ago after sailing a Laser for over 30 years. It has been a very rewarding experience to be in at the start of a new class and contribute, in a small way, to helping it grow. And now the RS Aero is already being considered as a replacement...

    Class Politics Olympic status

I understand your point of view but I don't think the lack of a network of coaches skilled in the new boat and a shortage of sailors with many years of experience in the new boat should stop a new boat from being selected for the Paris Olympics. Coaches and sailors would quickly transition to...

    Class Politics Olympic status

The source of this story about two new RS Aero rig sizes for the Olympics was a post on Dinghy Anarchy by "dsolnick" on October 4th which included this paragraph. As for the issue of the Olympics damaging a newer class, RS Sailing appears to have taken that concern to heart in their submission...

    Class Politics Olympic status

Is it a good thing for the bulk of regular, amateur sailors in a class for their class to be selected for the Olympic? I sailed a Laser for over 30 years from the time way before it was in the Olympics. I didn't see any changes to the class that were of benefit to me after it became an Olympic...

Class Politics All about to kick off....

And the suit against ILCA has been dismissed too. I don't think Kirby can sue anyone else. But what Global Sailing will do now is anybody's guess. They are still $1.6 million out of pocket with very little to show for it. And I suppose Kirby's lawyers could always appeal.

Class Politics All about to kick off....

I never reveal my sources. It's against the blogger's code. But seriously, a friend sent me a copy of the summary judgement. And that document is being quoted in the thread about this topic on Dinghy Anarchy.

Class Politics All about to kick off....

The judge has dismissed Bruce Kirby's claims against both Laser Performance and the Laser class on the grounds that Bruce Kirby has no standing to sue them, because he sold all his contractual and intellectual property rights to Global Sailing. Let's hope this is the end of the matter.

    News Update from LaserPerformance

It's not exactly "progress" (in spite of all the corporate double-speak in their statement) when they report they are closing down the Portsmouth RI factory and moving the manufacture of several of their boats to China. It's a sad day for the small boat sailing scene in N.America - and for the...

    Injection Molded Sunfish

Well that's the real issue isn't it? Is the Sunfish class going to make sure that Chinese Sunfish and (0ld) American Sunfish are identical for all practical purposes in term of racing performance? Or are they going to let LP make Sunfish in China which are lighter and stronger and stiffer (and...

    Injection Molded Sunfish

Thanks sailcraftri. I see that on another forum, someone who is a LP dealer has stated categorically that LP used the wrong words. They didn't mean "injection molded." They meant "resin infused." For people like me who have no real idea what that means, here is a video showing the resin...

    Injection Molded Sunfish

If the Chinese Sunfish are cheaper than American Sunfish and absolutely identical that would be great.

    Injection Molded Sunfish

No problem. Haven't been here for a few years so didn't know it's mainly an old boat restoration forum these days. Where do the Sunfish racers go to chat these days?

    Injection Molded Sunfish

I just assumed that people on the Sunfish Forum would be able to answer a question about Sunfish and that other people on the Sunfish Forum might be interested in the answer. I thought that that was the whole point of having a forum.

    Injection Molded Sunfish

Thanks for that Mike. Let's hope that they mean some process like this and they do it in a way that keeps the hulls identical in weight, stiffness etc. to the current hulls.
  18. Tillerman

    Injection Molded Sunfish

So what does that mean? Will there be two separate Sunfish classes for one design sailing? Old fiberglass hulls and new injection molded hulls?

    Injection Molded Sunfish

According to this statement from LaserPeformance it is their intention (bullet point 4) to start making Sunfish by an injection molding process by the end of the year. OneLaser Update Q1 2016 Can anyone explain to me what this means? Is this a major change from the current manufacturing...

Class Politics Possible reason why another class has been successful

The global newsletter of ILCA is Laser World which in North America is sent to us as an insert in our quarterly NA newsletter The Laser Sailor. I assume Laser World is distributed to ILCA members worldwide? In the December 2014 issue of Laser World, Tracy Usher ILCA President also addressed the...
