I end up in irons when I drop the tiller half way through a tack, or lose the main sheet on a tack. The boat will head up into the wind every time -- the course of least resistance -- and leave you with no forward momentum. I learned the "backing out" teachnique of getting out of irons when I...
Yesterday I sailed in wind gusts over 20 K. What a rush! I encountered two things maybe someone can answer for me.
First, was the rush of water through the daggerboard slot and into the boat and out the bailer on the wild reaches. I thought, "that rush of water up the dagger board slot...
I tried cleating in the tack. Not a good idea. Going low kept me out of irons. I think the longer tiller extension will help as well as PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!. Is there a way to extend my current tiller extender w/o replacing it? Thanks. Bill H.
My tiller extension is the standard 33" and it does seem a bit short on a deep hike forward in boat. I have to go back to get under the boom on the tack. That's where I get tangled up on the hand exchange. In an 18+ blow sailing behind my back is tricky, but I'm new to Sunfish...
I'm having trouble with the hand exchange between tiller and mainsheet in a blow. Sometimes I lose the tiller and end up in irons. When I try to hold the tiller and the sheet in the same hand I usually go real low and then have to tack up hard to get back on course. I always try to face...
Be careful if you use a router on the new board. There are about a dozen stainless steel rods that stiffen the board running through it that will do a j.o.b. on your router bits. Interesting, the diagram shows the handle hole, where my new board has only the holes for the "rope handle." Bill H.
AL:
Thanx for the tips. I used stainless steel rods instead of alum, inserting them into the board 1.5 inches into pre-drilled holes and set w/epoxy. My new board, built in UK (it has a label on it) is 44.5 inches from the button stop at the top of the board to the tip of the board. I...
Help!
I hit a stump and snapped the end off my daggerboard. About 4" are gone, just exposing the tips of the steel rods. The board is still sailable but I want to repair it over the winter. Anyone had any success repairing the "new" board? What will adhere to it? I plan to insert a...
Many thanx. I looked at the pixs of Worlds and Nationals and telltales seemed to be in many different places. Got my Sunfish Bible and it explained turbulence problems with the mast and the gaff. I placed my three sets just as you described and they work well.
Decisions about the...
I have one of the 2006 World Championship boats. Board is made in UK. Same size as old board. No handle hole. Instead, it comes with a 3' X 7mm rope to fashion a handle, using two holes in the top of the board. The rope handle works, but the knots get in the way. I finally taped off the...
:) Just bought one of the 2006 World Championship boats. Learning about rigging the Jens and Cunningham. Postings have helped. Still getting the feel for how much board is need when running, reaching. I've been a windsurfer for 20+ yrs, have one board with and one w/o daggerboard. Also...
