Tips for re-doing bottom of sunfish?

My Sunfish is moored in fresh water. Therefore I am looking for a paint that will withstand continuous immersion as well as provide a hard, abrasion resistant surface. On paper the garage floor epoxy is very intriguing but it sounds like the results are mixed at best. Interlux makes a 2-part...

How has your garage floor epoxy held up?

    Mast Step Problem

I have cut an access port in front of the daggerboard slot and found the internals to be reasonably dry. Therefore I am working on the premise that the integrity of the tube itself and the bond to the bottom of the hull is OK. I intend to supplement the resin with strenghtening filler. Thanx...

    Mast Step Problem

The plastic bottom mast cap that I have is flat on the bottom with radiused edges. I don't see any knob. By pouring the resin in the well (tube)you would obtain a flat surface upon which the flat mast cap would rest. Am I missing something? Thanx for the input. Paul

    Mast Step Problem

I recently purchased a 1973 Sunfish in need of repairs. The mast has abraded the bottom of the mast step well to the point where (2) dime-sized holes have been punctured on either side of the keelson. My thought is to place the boat rightside up, level it, tape the holes on the outside (so the...

    In praise of Rustoleum

I have used Rustoleum and have had good success on topsides. However it will not hold up as a bottom side paint on anything that is moored. I believe several years ago "Practical Sailor" gave Rustoleum good reviews as a marine paint.

Preping & painting hull of a '74 fish?

As I previously mentioned Perfection is more abrasion and sun resistant than Brightside. Like most things in this world it becomes a matter of time and money.

Preping & painting hull of a '74 fish?

Brightside comes in a variety of colors including several shades of white. If you are painting the entire hull then get the color you like. I personally like the Off-white #4381 which has a pinch of cream in it. Be assured that Brightside does have limitations. It is not the most abrasion...

Preping & painting hull of a '74 fish?

Thanks. Keep us posted on your experience with Perfection; I have not tried any of the LPU paints such as Awlgrip, Perfection, Sterling, etc. I have used (2) part epoxy paint, Dupont Corlan, for under the waterline application using "roll and tip" method. It is not the easiest to work with.

Preping & painting hull of a '74 fish?

My previous post talked about painting a Sunfish hull. Unfortunately most paints, Brightside included, are not suitable for wet sailed or moored sailboats. The exception is (2) part epoxy paint such as Interlux Perfection VC. Like your circumstance my current Sunfish has multiple pathches but...

Preping & painting hull of a '74 fish?

I have restored several Sunfish, Lasers, Force 5's, etc. Those boats that are dry sailed I have used the previously mentioned Interlux Brightside with very good results. However there are several factors in obtaining a good finish. Obviously the patch work must be fair. Use a long sanding board...

    sail care

I am the new owner of an '69 with a relatively new sail. Unfortunately the previous owner furled the sail by wrapping it around the spars and poked a couple of very minute (pinhead) holes adjacent to the sail clips. Should I put something over these tiny holes? I hate the thoughts of...
