    Mast Tape

Got some 2" plastic mast tape that is supposed to protect the mast and step and to tighten the fit in the step. Instructions say to put the upper piece at 14" above the mast foot. However, this would put the upper tape above the deck by about 1/2", and, it seems to me, that it should be at deck...

    70s rudder

Have rescued a 1970 'fish. It has modern rudder gudgeons, but the spring pin is operated from the bottom (upside down?). The tiller looks authentic in shape and material but the bolts over the blade are positioned such that the forward end always scrapes over the stern deck. . . It's worn a...

    Hobie/Holder Centerboard

Does anyone know an easy way to replace the centerboard pennant. The boat has the 80s mod glass board and some kind of spring to raise it.

    Mast tube repair

My 2006 has a visible vertical crack at about 11:00 looking aft. When water gets into the tube, it leaks slowly into the hull until there's about 1" left at the bottom of the tube. I could treat the crack with penetrating epoxy and perhaps lay a strip of glass tape on it. . . There appears to be...

    Drain plug

I assume it's not illegal to install a drain plug low on the transom. BTW, Anybody know history behind putting it by the gunwale instead of the transom?

    Rudder Springs

I'm replacing the rudder blade on a modern Sunfish. Are there any tricks for getting those 2 side springs on and off (actually, off and on)? I have tried searches on this forum and don't seem to connect to my question.

    Leech tension

The leech on my racing sail is too tight going to windward. According to tales on it, I can't get flow on the lee side and flow off the leech at the same time. I have seen reference to gooseneck position and also to relocating the boom blocks; the latter to change thrust on the boom. Of course...

    Sail ties

Is there any new thinking on sail ties? I'm planning on using 7/64" vectran. The 3/16" Amsteel on my current racing sail doesn't readjust (slide) well in light air. Is there a "definitive" reference on the 'net?

    JC Strap

How do you rig the daggerboard retainer as a JC strap? Do you just lead it outside and over the spar eyebolts, or do you thread through one of them? Also, it seems to me that tension would be on the stretched side of the shockcord, and it would tend to pull the sail inboard rather than out...

    Sunfish title/registration

I’m restarting this as a separate thread. This is an issue that remains poorly understood and it has frequently arisen in discussions with powerboaters and Wildlife Service folks. http://www.ncwildlife.org/Boating_Waterways/ A title is a permanent, one-time document/record that stays...

    sail clips vs. ties

I've been using short pieces light synth line to tie my sail to the spars. They don't readjust (slide) on the spar easily when I use the Cunningham. It seems to me that clips might slide better. . . and they'd provide uniform spacing more easily. Any observations on this?

    leech tension

What adjustments can be used to open up (reduce cupping) the leech on the 'fish sail?

    Outhaul/Cunningham rigging

Vgd recommends turning running lines through bowline loops to gain mechanical purchase for trimming the sail edges. The rule says that you can use rings rather than loops in the lines. I have also seen small blocks used for this. I assume that the blocks are against the rule. I (might)...

    2006 mast plug

Ref. “What’s with fattening the mast” thread 2/25 -3/25/06. We just got a new 2006 ‘fish yesterday and the mast has two 1/16”+ pins, 3/16” and 1 5/32” above the base of the Al tubing. Presumably, the upper one fastens the new reinforcing insert. I’m glad they’re using the pins instead of “pop”...

    Boom Vang

I'd really like to know more about vanging the S'fish sail. I certainly agree with the concept of cleating the halyard on the mast and I've seen photos of the double pass around the gooseneck cleated to the horn on the deck (tried that). However, it just doesn't seem to me that you can get the...

    SF mast plugs

We have 3 relatively new S'fish masts (2003 and 2004 boats) and the bottom plugs are ripping out. One was lost, one was found in the bottom of the mast tube. They came out, leaving the single rivet in the mast, but with the rivet hole torn out of the plug. A ring of transparent silicone (with...
