Best method of cutting up a rotted Sunfish hull!

signal charlie, Sorry but I didn't take any pics of the destruction. It really was a sad moment to cut her up. I couldn't help but think of all the times times on this poor abused boat. My bad but I am not sure I really wanted the evidence photo's.

Best method of cutting up a rotted Sunfish hull!

Well the evil deed is done. The SawZall with a long bi metal blades cut thru the rotted / waterlogged hull like soft butter. I had it cut in three pieces in less than an hour. My solution for the problem and made very little mess.

Best method of cutting up a rotted Sunfish hull!

The angle grinder was my first guess at the best method. The Sawsall might be good for the interior and foam. Right there with you on the eye and lung protection.

Best method of cutting up a rotted Sunfish hull!

" Think you used enough dynamite there Butch" The Sundance Kid. That would do the trick but the clean-up would be hell.

Best method of cutting up a rotted Sunfish hull!

danpal, You are much more patient than I am. They control our trash with so many regulations, these tiny containers & they only pick up once a week. I would be past Christmas with your method. lol

Best method of cutting up a rotted Sunfish hull!

I purchased a 1973? Sunfish yesterday for a parts boat to fill in some areas on our current rebuild. The hull is so bad that I almost blew off the deal until the seller finally admitted that I was the only one to look at the boat and he needed it gone. When the price dropped to a case of beer...

    Sunfish drying the insides

I agree with these guys. Run a leak test and let that decide the best location for the port. We were sure where our leak was until we ran the test and found four areas leaking. I think this would avoid extra ports and work. Good luck

    Towing Question- Need Advice

We used the Harbor Freight version as well on our F150 short bed and and padded the cross brace and bed and our boat rides very well. If you use this method make sure and run a strap thru the bow handle to the back of the bed to keep her from sliding backward. Good luck

    Cracked Deck

Thank all of you for the input. We need to get her dry and order supplies , so that will give us a chance to consider the options.

    Cracked Deck

Thanks for the input mixmkr. My son really wants to avoid another inspection port on the front deck much like you are suggesting. As a rookie glass repair guy , I feel like we might be more comfortable trying the method mentioned by 4cpus4me ( Shoreline Sailboat video method). This would...

    Cracked Deck

Are there any videos / extensive explanations for Mixmkr's method. It sounds counterproductive to cut out holes in the hull (which shows no damage) to gain access to the deck. Pardon the ignorance.

    Cracked Deck

The previous owner said they had stuck the mast in the mud on a local shallow lake, hence the covered up damage and the bent mask -- another issue to deal with later.

    Cracked Deck

L&VW, The hull is solid in this area and the mask step held water for 2 days with no problem. We are trying to dry out the hull after her maiden voyage , but the air test was only this area and a couple of small deck edge leaks. She doubled in weight after sailing on two consecutive days so...

    Cracked Deck

Bought this Sunfish for $200 and it had these wooden pieces across the bow. We went ahead and removed the pieces to find a large crack. After extensive research on the net and reading a ton of your posts, we are still unsure how to attack this issue. Would we be better off installing a deck...
