    Sunfish vs Minifish?

I was pondering the Minifish/Sunfish question as I packed up my kayaks for a camping trip this weekend (yes, I am taking my Minifish as well) I have a 16 foot Old Town tandem/solo kayak. It is fast, comfortable, and can carry a huge load of camping gear. It can handle almost any kind of weather...

    Sunfish vs Minifish?

lol, my collection will soon be complete. I had planned on buying a few small sailboats to use with family and friends, but I wasn’t thinking specifically of Alcort designs. TBH, the interchangeable parts (and parts availability) had a lot to do with my choices. but I was able to find all three...

    Sunfish vs Minifish?

I am “in process” in regards to the Sunfish. And I agree: they are both fun. Just different!

    Sunfish vs Minifish?

first of all, I don’t think that a Minifish does better in high winds than a Sunfish, as it has a narrower beam. And while it has a hiking strap it is (imho) too hard to use, and the cockpit rim has no place to lock your feet while hiking out. The Mini can be hard to keep upright in strong...

    Double Sunfish Trailer

That’s the main reason that I own a Minifish and a Sailfish. They go side by side on my kayak trailer. Together, with a little bit over overlapping, they are “just about” 80 inches. I wanted to get two Minifish, but that would have put me well over!

    Lug rig

Thanks for all of the above. You have given me plenty to think about! I appreciate all of the suggestions! I spent a couple of days kayaking/kayaking 20 miles Chincoteague Sound this week, and while doing so I was able to clarify my thoughts a bit. I am in my 60s, retired, and not really in all...

    Lug rig

After watching AIR’s videos, and reading some if the old posts on this forum, it seems that perhaps some sort of lug sail rig might improve the Sunfish’s cruising capabilities without sacrificing too much performance. Has anyone actually tried that out? I have seen several proposals, but no...

    AMF Alcort Minifish

It probably isn’t terribly relevant, but just in case it might help you to see your boat, I believe that the Minifish didn’t come out until 1971. It has the “ new style” rudder, which is a plus.

sunfish booms on a minifish + bailer problem

I have been curious, as well. I am hoping to get my Sailfish and Minifish out on the lake this weekend. If I can (and I figure there’s about a 50% chance if that) I will try swapping rigs and submit a report.

    Using a Sunfish for sailing/camping

Thank you for correcting my mis-observations! I am glad to hear that the kayak paddle worked, as I really wasn’t coming up with a viable alternative. I already have the extra long paddles for my huge Old Town Tandem. I am glad the foam worked. You sure didn’t look comfortable, but that’s...

    Towing Question- Need Advice

I have been using my kayak trailer a lot lately for various things. A couple of days ago my wife and I took her car to the grocery store. As I drove by several parking places she looked at me and said, “you know that we aren’t pulling a trailer right now, right?” I said “Of course I do!” I lied.

    Boat Pics

My poor wife has been trying to civilize me for 45 years. It is, of course, an impossible task, but every once in a while I try to be polite. The end result is kind of like watching a buffalo walk carefully thru a china shop, But I figure I should get points for trying

    Using a Sunfish for sailing/camping

What I have learned from your videos: - take Dramamine before heading off-shore - that I can get an affordable sat device to let my wife know she can’t cash in my life insurance in just yet - a Sunfish might be too wide to use a kayak paddle efficiently. I will have to give that some thought...

I really shouldn’t answer texts in the middle of the night. My response could have been a bit more tactful. Old age insomnia makes me grumpy. Or at least sound that way!

Most Sailfish sails are for the Super Sailfish (wood) or the Super Sailfish MKii (fiberglass). Those sails are identical to the Sunfish sail. The original Sailfish sail was the same as the Minifish sail. At least one person on this forum used a Minifish sail on his Sunfish by accident, I think...

    An insane adventure

NOT a place I would choose to explore! I prefer the nice, warm waters behind the barrier islands off Virginia and North Carolina, or the Chesapeake Bay, all areas which I am familiar with from kayaking.

    An insane adventure

If you have ever wanted to go cruising on a Sunfish, you owe it to yourself to check this series out! I am planning my first Minifish cruise, and I was able to pick out a number of helpful ideas. One thing is for certain: Lake Superior is too much for me! I think I will stick to calmer, more...
