    Sunfish Events

I grew up in Winter Haven and learned to sail on Lake Eloise just outside of Cypress Gardens (now LegoLand). First on a styrofoam Sea Snark that I fiberglassed, and then on a Jetwind. These photos brought back some great memories!

    De Persia automatic bailer

Here is the bailer ball out of my De Persia. As you can see in the photo it is 0.622 inches, or 15.8 mm.

    Yahoo Group Sunfish_Sailor Shutting Down

This photo reminds of something Jackson Pollack might paint. Actually quite beautiful. I’d not be ashamed to have a 4’x4’ reproduction of that photo in my office!

    Yahoo Group Sunfish_Sailor Shutting Down

Thank you so much, Signal Charlie, for all your hard work in saving this important archive of information and knowledge. I’m sure I will be perusing it for tips and how-to’s over the winter months. I’ve got a ‘71 with a leak in its bow seam, a heavy ‘69 “rescue-fish” with cracks in the cubby...

    Sunfish Assisted Capsize Recovery

I believe Phantom Driver was suggesting that this video is a good one to save, either bookmarking this thread or re-posting through one of the social media tools. Both are possible using the icons in the top right of the thread.

    Yahoo Group Sunfish_Sailor Shutting Down

The direction of this thread reminds me of one of my favorite episodes of the British Sitcom, "The IT Crowd" that parodies the fickleness of social media by making up 'FriendFace'. A clip of the episode is on YouTube if you want a good laugh if the weather is too bad for Sailing this afternoon. :)

Looking for safety tips for sailing all alone

wjejr's notes below about carrying spare line remind me that I also carry 20' of ⅜" line coiled in front of the cowling and attached to the handle on the front of the boat. It could be used for towing; I can use it to create a stirrup to get back in the boat if needed; and I also use that line...

Signal Charlie, I echo the others who thank you for all the work you are doing to keep this valuable information in the public domain. Your comments on Yahoo's business model caused me to wonder how is SailingForums funded?

Curious mounting holes in the deck

Hmmm. Risers. I hadn’t thought of that. Good idea. What thickness do you recommend?

Looking for safety tips for sailing all alone

I glued a small stainless steel U bolt to the inside of the cubby and bungeed a small waterproof box to that. Inside, I have a small airhorn, a handful of zip ties for repairs, an expired drivers license for identification, and my cell phone. Even if I flip the boat, I won’t lose any of that.

Maybe this will be my Sunfish

Just read your travelogues on the Los Coronados trips. Cool stuff.

    Why’d I wait soo long?

Yep. When the boat starts to plane and then a gust hits and pops you over the waves... When on a broad reach and your also getting a boost surfing the waves... yep.

    Sunfish vs Minifish

My thumbnail to the left shows the two of us (me and my wife) in my 71 'fish. It is definitely different sailing vs. solo, but still lots of fun. I remove the tiller extension or fold it back when there are two. I can't imagine 3 or 4 people, though. However, a friend in FL told me just the...

Maybe this will be my Sunfish

I love the ad for the Sunfish jib sail on page 6 of the 1981 newsletter!

    Trailer, maybe also a dolly

That HF trailer is designed to carry 1200 pounds of load. It has a three leaf suspension. Your sunfish with mast, rigging, sale, etc. will only be a couple hundred pounds. I think it would be difficult to configure the trailer so that the sunfish has a soft ride. My two cents...

Curious mounting holes in the deck

Agreed. Looking at the orientation of the holes, your boat's original owner likely installed clam cleats like the ones shown by LaLi and Beldar.... not cam cleats as I incorrectly said in my earlier post. Cam Cleats would be better for the mainsheet, IMHO. See photo below. Clam Cleats are often...

Curious mounting holes in the deck

And in the center, the previous owner mounted a ratchet block. When needing a free hand, they could secure the main sheet with one of the cam cleats.

Maybe this will be my Sunfish

I highly discourage using your horse to haul the sunfish, whether using a traditional trailer or the fancy travois that you describe above. The last time I tried it, she pooped in the mast step and I didn’t notice until I tried to get the mast out and found that it had cemented itself to the...

New bailer ball for my Sunfish

I stand corrected... By unscrewing the stopper, you can remove the entire bailer. This is different from the older metal bailer that requires you to remove both the metal stopper and a separate locking nut if you want to get inside the bailer. The rubber grommet that I referred to replacing in...

New bailer ball for my Sunfish

I do not think you need to remove the bailer in order to install a new ball and rubber seal for the ball. After you unscrew the stopper from the inside of the cubby, you can pull out the black rubber grommet at the bottom of the inside of the bailer, then drop in the new ball and replace the...
